Eligibility

Drivers must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible to run for or receive the Rookie of the Year award.

1. Must have run no more than five (prior to 2001) or seven (2001-10) races in any previous season. Starting in 2011, with the new series declaration rule in effect, the rule was changed to state seven races in any previous season in which they have declared they will race for driver points in that series. If they have not run for points in that series, their eiligibility remains intact, regardless of how many races they ran in a season. [1]

1. Drivers who compete in more than five races in a higher series are not eligible for the award in a lower series, if they have not declared for the higher series. 2. If a driver does not start eight races before the end of Race 20 on the schedule, they will immediately become ineligible to earn rookie points for the rest of that season. The seven-race-limit for declared series (as of 2011) still applies pertaining to eligibility for future attempts. 3. A driver may not receive rookie points if he/she starts a race for a team that he/she did not qualify with. However, he/she is still eligible for championship points in that race.

There have been a few cases where aspiring Sprint Cup drivers have sacrificed their future eligibility to be Rookie of the Year candidates by driving part-time schedules including more than seven Cup races. For example, in 2009, Brad Keselowski ended up running 15 races, including a win at Talladega. Two other famous drivers who did the same thing are Carl Edwards (13 Cup races in 2004), and Marcos Ambrose (11 races in 2008.)

On the other hand, 2007 Rookie of the Year winner Juan Pablo Montoya was eligible even though he had previously been the 1999 Rookie of the Year in the CART series (which at the time was the top level of open wheel racing.)

The 2009 Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year was Johnny Sauter, who ironically was a veteran of both the Nationwide Series and Sprint Cup Series. He had never run more than three truck races in any previous season, and made no 2009 starts at all in either of the two higher-level series, hence he was eligible for the truck series' rookie award. The 2006 Nationwide Series RoTY runner-up John Andretti was a veteran of the Cup Series but had made only one prior Nationwide Series start, making him eligible for the award.

In 1992, Ricky Craven, the Busch Series Rookie of the Year, actually had run seven races when the limit was five in 1991. However, Craven was only credited with two Busch-only starts, as the other five starts were in combination races with the Busch North Series, which he was a full-time regular at the time. The races were registered in the Busch North Series, so he could enter the race in that series and not compromise his eligibility in the "South" series.

Beginning in 2011, drivers that are ineligible for points in one series cannot earn Rookie points in that series. For example, Trevor Bayne ran 18 races in 2011. However, due to him declaring to run for the Nationwide championship, Bayne was also ineligible to declare for ROTY in 2011. Under revised NASCAR rules on rookie eligibility, Bayne, once he declares as a Sprint Cup driver, will be eligible for the rookie title.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but according to what I see on the TCS websites final point standings page, I do not believe that Seets III met this criteria.

First off this is a bunch off bullsh.t rule cause how do you expect to have a rookie that's never seen the track before let alone in the mods to be in the top ten member points with 15 to 20 of the best in the Midwest around this area...get fckin real guys !!!!

Did we not have this same argument after last season? My mind could be playing tricks on me....;)

Yes we did...its the same case with Joey and Johnny as it was with Josh Case and Erik Sedlack !!! Joey and Josh both have been racing for years and tried to get the award over someone who never raced anything in there life... Kevin and Tammy will do the right thing I hope.

According to TCS rules....the Rookie of the Year Award goes to.....Walsh. Congrats on a nice year! Thank you Kevin and Tammy for sticking to your rulebook! That is what rules are put in place for. Can't change at this stage of the game but maybe next year.

th th the the the what you crackhead. theres nothing to bring to the top, your guy didnt win the ' th no paying feel good about yourself' award, quit crying

images.jpg Dirtboy pile up all your beer cans get a glue gun and make him a award no harm no fowl. Congrats to both drivers on a great year.

I sure hope just cause Joey Walsh is the Nephew of Kenny Shcrader you ain't gonna screw someone out the award cause you don't want Kenny not coming back to the track...time to make the right call and give it to the runner up!!!!!

Quit trying to make crap up. He won it based off their guidelines.
