A very warm evening at Central Missouri Speedway with a good crowd on hand witnessed some of the hottest modified racing action of the season on Miller Beer Race Night last night. Co-Promoters Mike Pierce and Dan Chevalier had again announced their racing plans earlier this week for the remainder of the 2005 and the upcoming 2006 seasons at CMS and Bates County Raceway. The hot racing action will continue at CMS with Pierce and Chevalier throughout the 2005 race season before the Chevalier Family moves on to Bates County Raceway next season. Mike Pierce will also work to continue promoting the CMS track and work with the current owner, Earl Walls for options on the 2006 season and beyond. The crowd cheered loudly after the announcement with the CMS family wishing the best of luck to the Chevalier Family on their new endeavor. Then it was on to some of the hot racing action on the track with the Street Stocks, 305 Sprints, 360 Midwest Sprint Car Series (MSCS), Limited Late Models and the Mighty Modifieds.

The street stock heat races were exciting and full of clean racing action with the j66 – Jay Lyle of Warrensburg, a 42 year veteran driver of numerous car classes taking the first heat and 94 – John Ebert of Bates City charging to the checkers in the second heat. The Street Stock feature started with 16 cars and was the first caution free race of the season in the division. The leaders ran a smart race with lapped traffic and the contenders working high and low on the track. The finish featured the Warrensburg trio of drivers starting with the veteran Jay Lyle taking the win. Lyle was challenged by 10- Mark Carter after entering into some lapped traffic later in the race Lyle kept his line above and below the traffic and took the checkers for his first CMS feature this year followed by the 10 – Mark Carter of Warrensburg and by 28 – Wayne Harper also from Warrensburg.

The 305 Sprints and the MSCS 360 Sprints held a combined A feature with separate heat races for each class. The 305 Sprint heat race winners were the 11m Terry Moore – Grain Valley and 82 – Michael Brown - Kingsville. The MSCS 360 Sprint heat race checkers went to the 24 – Alan Billings from Topeka, Kansas. Promoters decided to place the 305 Sprints at the front of the pack followed by the MSCS 360 Sprints which actually produced two Feature winners from the 16 Sprint cars starting the race. The feature race did not include points leader 98 – Gabe Maycock who blew an engine during hot laps. The second in points 82 – Michael Brown fought early with the second row starter 1 -Randy Roberts for the lead. On lap 7, the 55-Kenny Potter machine spun out bringing out the yellow, but Roberts with that early lead hung on for his First Sprint Feature win of the season. Roberts had several chances earlier this season with some bad breaks, however made this one win stick. The 360 MSCS Sprints put on a great show weaving through traffic with the 99m – Harry Myers of Topeka, Kansas taking the checkers for his division after the 24 – Alan Billings lead early in the 360 Sprint class.

The Limited Late Model class twisted up the chassis to the crowds delight with a new Heat race winner tonight. The 88 – Derek Nevels car survived numerous challenges from 93 – Brett Rollert and 21s of Jeff Schlup from California to take the checkers in the Late Model heat. In the feature race Nevels got sideways early and Schlup made his move quickly to the front of the pack never looking back to take his first Late Model feature at CMS this year. Another familiar car and second in points, 16- David Gemes from Clinton maneuvered his way from outside row 2 to finish second. The 93 – Brett Rollert out of Smithton put some early pressure on Schlup in the race, but fell back later to finish a solid third.

The Mighty Modifieds registered 32 cars with many of the familiar drivers the fans are used to cheering for each and every week at CMS. The heats were another fantastic show of skilled driving on an excellent tacky surface during the heats races. The heat feature winners included; 8m James McMillen- Warrensburg, 99 Lee Hibner - Chillicothe, 8 Joe Bradshaw - Sedalia and 51 Smokin Joe Walker- Harrisonville. During Heat race number 1 the 85D Mark Dotson modified from Cameron flipped over several times off turn one before coning to rest on his wheels and amazingly returned to the B –Feature. Some last lap passes and battles throughout the heats produced numerous 2 and 3 wide hot racing action with several high and low racing lines. It was obvious to all the CMS Mighty Modified fans the feature was going to be a barn burner with a smooth track turning dry late in the races.

After the B Feature the final four drivers were shuffled into the A main with 77 Doug Walrath from Clinton, 27 T - Bob Test out of Jefferson City and the 27- David Angel Holden going back and forth with the 85D- Dotson car moving into the top four at one point. Finally the 8up – David Farrow – Warrensburg came out of a tangle in the front straight with the final transfer spot with the 97j Brian Johnson Independence and 85D- Mark Dotson just missing the A feature.

The Modified A feature started with the 8m McMillen, 99 Lee Hibner and 51 Joe Walker charging into an early battle for the lead. On lap 5, the 91 of James Reid from Clinton spun and the 02 of Jesse Wheeler had to pull off for a potential fuel problem. Wheeler was cleared back onto the track after officials said he was good to run. Lap 9 turned into the longest lap of the night after the 47 of Ed Griggs suffered a flat tire and had to depart. On the Lap 9 re-start a front straightaway crash with 02 Wheeler, 27T Bob Test, 9 Dave Meyers, and 94 of Charlie Ebert getting together. The Meyer and Ebert machines were twisted together and at one point the drivers had to depart their cars for safety with a sparking battery. After the cars were pulled apart the racing got underway and the hot modified action continued with McMillen taking the low side and 90 Terry Schultz and others on the high side. Eventually, 68 Dean Wille pressured McMillen and with a slip on the low side in turn 4, Wille slide into him and was able to pass with just several laps left for his second victory in two weeks. Another driver with a fantastic showing was the 96 – Chad Lyle car out of Lone Jack coming from 16th place slowly picking his way to finish second with McMillen slipping back to third.

Join the CMS racing family once again next week, June 25 for the County Kitchen sponsored race along with the Weekly Farm and Home of Warrensburg show featuring the Mighty Modifieds, 305 and MSCS 360 Sprints, Limited Late Models and Street Stocks. Gates open at 5:00 pm with Hot laps at 7:00 with Racing beginning at 7:30. Check www.centralmospeedway for up to date racing results, drivers points and track news.
