ulma and ump crate

Since there has been talk about what to run at mcs, to the average fan what is the difference between a ulma late model and a ump crate late model? Just wondering

We ran with the ULMA late models the last 3 years with our crate. They have rules that let them run a limited engine (stock valve angle, steel block) or you can run a crate motor. Depending on the motor and heads determines how much you have to weigh. They also have to run a spec tire (D55). Chassis, body, shocks should all be the same. We ran ULMA, PCRA, and a couple UMP races last year all with the same car. No changes had to be made except for weight.

I would like to seem ULMA run at MCS because that covers the crate motors, and you dont have to have a super late model motor. It is less expensive for the racers so it would be easier for people to make the transition up but is still a very competitive class. The payout is less than the supers so that saves the track some $$. This would also get rid of having 2 late model classes and let a sportsman class be brough back. On the other threads there is a huge interest in ULMA AND Sportsman being run up there but it looks like they are going with neither and choosing a couple classes that I believe wont have the car counts. JMO.

Either way we plan on supporting MCS with our car as much as possible.

D55

The D55 tire is the big equalizer between the ULMA and crate engine. If I was putting together a late model to run at MCS it would definately be with a 604 crate. That is based on the cost savings and ability to race several tracks and series in the area with that package. The 604 crate engine has and will continue to be competive/successful under the ULMA banner. In my opinion the tech program as always will be vital to a tracks success regardless of what classes are decided. Tech MUST be consistant, harsh, and FOLOWED THROUGH WITH past the first three weeks of racing. Yes it is not a lot of fun in July at 11pm with sweat in your eyes to disassemble your racecar for tech but that is what is neccessary!!

The ULMA crates will be good with the ump crates, but we now have all steel 23 deg motors. And running them against the super lates is going to be a little hard to do at times. Dyno comparison with our motors we had in the past.
Our good 604 crate made 430hp
Our 23 deg ULMA motors are 630 and 670hp
Our 18deg super engines were 740 and 780hp
I will run my ULMA with the opens but against some with 800+ I'll try to not get discouraged.
With ULMA they could run as one class and none of the big guys that run peavely or highland will come effecting those tracks car counts. There has always been a Saturday option in central Missouri for latemodels with CMS, lake ozark and moberly closed now This should be the main draw for this track! But a lot of cars here may not even give it a chance because it's against supers. A tire rule might help but doesn't guarantee a full field like there would be with ULMA.
