There is a great classic rock song by the rock band Styx containing the following lyric, "The stage is set the band starts playing, suddenly your heart is pounding" (DeYoung, 1977). Although rock and roll and dirt late model racing may be comparatively miles apart, this lyric could easily be used to describe what is in store for drivers and fans for the 2009 United Late Model Association (ULMA) race season. The stage is now set and between the four affiliated tracks and a handful of special events, drivers will have over 75 different opportunities to earn points towards the ULMA's third heart-pounding championship points battle.

Each affiliated ULMA track has now released its schedule and the first points-earning opportunity for drivers will officially take place on Friday, April 10th at Callaway Raceways, which is located in Central Missouri near Fulton. There are a total of twenty-three Friday night races scheduled at Callaway this year. For the first time ever, the track has announced if Mother Nature spoils the regularly scheduled Friday night fun, make-up races will take place on Sunday afternoons, Easter Sunday being the exception. Drivers can get a hard start on the competition by participating in the track's practice session on Saturday, April 4th (rain date April 5th). For more information visit the track's official Web site at www.callawayraceways.com.

Butler Motor Speedway (BMS) in Butler, Missouri will provide ULMA members racing in the South-East portion of the state along the Highway 71 corridor. There are twenty-one Friday nights on the BMS race schedule with the first weekly program getting underway on Friday, April 24th. On Friday, May 22nd, ULMA competitors will participate in a ULMA special event at the track with a $750-to-win, $100-to-start feature race. BMS has a test and tune session scheduled for Saturday, April 18th from 12:30 until 4:00 in the afternoon. For more information visit the track's official Web site at www.butlermotorspeedway.webs.com.

Weekly late model racing returns to Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri for the third consecutive year beginning on Saturday, April 25th. All competitors competing in the late model division are required to be ULMA members and must fully comply with the association's rules while competing at the track. There are twelve weekly race events scheduled this year at the speedway and one additional points-earning opportunity for ULMA drivers will take place when ULMA supports the United States Modified Touring series, which will make an appearance at the track on Saturday, June 27th. A test and tune session is scheduled at the track for Saturday, April 4th from noon to dusk. Additional information for Lucas Oil Speedway may be found at www.lucasoilspeedway.com.

Greater Kansas City-area late model drivers will have Valley Speedway in located in Grain Valley, Missouri on Saturday nights to earn association points for the chase for the 2009 championship. There are fifteen nights on the track's schedule in which ULMA competitors will take part. It is important to note that mufflers are mandatory at Valley Speedway. Several test and tune events are scheduled beginning in early March. For detailed information regarding the test sessions and scheduled ULMA appearances visit www.valleyspeedway.com. ULMA and Valley Speedway are looking for business partners for the coming season. Interested business establishments are urged to contact ULMA or Valley Speedway for additional information through the association and track Web sites.

In addition to the aforementioned weekly races, ULMA drivers will also take part in special events throughout the year. The first special event takes place at the exciting 24 Raceway in Moberly, Missouri on Saturday, April 18th. The ULMA Spring Challenge feature event will pay $1,000 to the winner and at least $150 to the 24 drivers starting the race. ULMA officials are extremely excited about this event and looking forward to the first-ever ULMA late model race at the ultra-fast track. Detailed information regarding the track is located at www.24racewayinmoberly.com. Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) in Warrensburg, Missouri will host ULMA late models on three occasions this season with appearances scheduled during the Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day holiday weekends.
