To all UMP Drivers,
The good news is that it looks like almost all the scheduled tracks got to race this weekend. Car counts at all tracks were very good and from what I hear all tracks had real good grandstand counts as well.
The bad news is there is a lot of people behaving badly.
I went to 3 race tracks this weekend and at all 3 tracks drivers were involved in things that made me concerned. When I got to my office on Monday, from the time I opened the door until about noon I had a steady stream of calls from promoters and drivers telling me about things that happened over the weekend. I would say since the season has started we have had around 15 things happen at different tracks. 12 of these things happened this weekend. When I say “things” I am referring to overaggressive driving, spinning each other out, cursing officials, ramming other cars after the race is over, flipping off drivers and officials in plain view of the fans, fighting in the stands and the pits, drinking in the pits and throwing deadly weapons at race cars.
This behavior will stop and it had better stop now. Let me be very clear about this. I will not tolerate you people acting this way. I am giving all of you a gift today. I am acting like I have not heard about any of the above, but please understand the next thing I hear about the consequences will be harsh. I can and I will suspend you for as little as week or as much as the entire year if I feel I need to. I will fine you up to $1000.00 depending on the incident.
Don’t think I will not find out about it, because a track does not report it because I will. Most of the calls I got was from drivers. If a track allows you to race after I throw you out I will pull their sanction.
You people are all suppose to be professionals, Fans come to the track and pay their money to have you entertain them. They don’t come there to watch you beat the hell out of each other. How do you think a little girl in the stands feels watching her Dad get shoved, punched and kicked. What if that was your little girl. I know you people get mad about things that happen, But you always have to remember people are watching what you do all the time. You are remodels to adults and kids alike.
Me and my staff work very hard to take care of you drivers, I can’t think of a time a driver has asked me for something that I did not do for him. I fight for you drivers and promoters all the time. I don’t do it for the money, I do it because you are my people. We are the best in the racing industry and everyone of you matter to me. I want all of you to succeed and be the best you can.
Please do not take my kindness for weakness, I do not want to send anyone home, But I will if this stuff does not stop.
