UMP’s Good News/Bad News

To all UMP Drivers,

The good news is that it looks like almost all the scheduled tracks got to race this weekend. Car counts at all tracks were very good and from what I hear all tracks had real good grandstand counts as well.

The bad news is there is a lot of people behaving badly.

I went to 3 race tracks this weekend and at all 3 tracks drivers were involved in things that made me concerned. When I got to my office on Monday, from the time I opened the door until about noon I had a steady stream of calls from promoters and drivers telling me about things that happened over the weekend. I would say since the season has started we have had around 15 things happen at different tracks. 12 of these things happened this weekend. When I say “things” I am referring to overaggressive driving, spinning each other out, cursing officials, ramming other cars after the race is over, flipping off drivers and officials in plain view of the fans, fighting in the stands and the pits, drinking in the pits and throwing deadly weapons at race cars.

This behavior will stop and it had better stop now. Let me be very clear about this. I will not tolerate you people acting this way. I am giving all of you a gift today. I am acting like I have not heard about any of the above, but please understand the next thing I hear about the consequences will be harsh. I can and I will suspend you for as little as week or as much as the entire year if I feel I need to. I will fine you up to $1000.00 depending on the incident.

Don’t think I will not find out about it, because a track does not report it because I will. Most of the calls I got was from drivers. If a track allows you to race after I throw you out I will pull their sanction.

You people are all suppose to be professionals, Fans come to the track and pay their money to have you entertain them. They don’t come there to watch you beat the hell out of each other. How do you think a little girl in the stands feels watching her Dad get shoved, punched and kicked. What if that was your little girl. I know you people get mad about things that happen, But you always have to remember people are watching what you do all the time. You are remodels to adults and kids alike.

Me and my staff work very hard to take care of you drivers, I can’t think of a time a driver has asked me for something that I did not do for him. I fight for you drivers and promoters all the time. I don’t do it for the money, I do it because you are my people. We are the best in the racing industry and everyone of you matter to me. I want all of you to succeed and be the best you can.

Please do not take my kindness for weakness, I do not want to send anyone home, But I will if this stuff does not stop.

UMP Director

I wouldnt give the 15 that already happened a second chance. People are ruthless these days I would protect myself and business from lawsuits in every way I could it only takes one person to ruin it. I know a person who lost their business cause they did not take proper action to an assault on their property. If you fought at my race track just one time bye bye.

i see a lot of this too, some things like the aggressive driving spinning others out, etc. happen because the promoters dont allow the flagman to control the track. The flagman throws a black flag and the promoter allows the driver to continue. Don't get me wrong, its not only the promoter, but a lot of officials turn there back on aggressive driving, they say "well I did't see it" and I have heard that a lot. I agree with you Sam, Something has to be done.

Sam may be right

First of all Sam is shaking his finger at the wrong people to get the results he wants. Ump sets the rules for the racers to follow. Each track has to enforce the rules!! Sam will soon be on here defending every decision made by a track. That should not happen.

Each track has to monitor itself . Some Will do a better job than others.
Most calls at a track are discretionary calls . Always unpopular with some. If handled in a consistent matter can be seen as fairness. Always the cry of favoritism of course. Promoters should have big shoulders. Hard to believe a promoter would call the UMP office to complain about something. Grow up people it is your show, deal with it.

If Sam saw improper conduct then One would have to believe he made his feelings known to the officials.

The track officials should make the call and the penalty properly assessed and a letter in the hands of the UMP office by Monday morning. Racers should be able to appeal the decision, altho usually not winnable.

I just see to much whining and crying in racing today. People like myself can get on the INTERNET and whine and cry foul and accuse racers, tracks and UMP of most anything and not know half the details. When I do not understand a call made at the track I usually try to find out why the call was made the way it was. Guess what? Most times I did not clearly understand the rule itself.

We don't need more rules, just enforce what you have. If promoters do not follow the rules set forth by a sanction then the sanction can make a phone call to the promoter and get things straightened out.

Tracks can also set their own rules outside the sanctioning body.

Have to agree with jumpinjack1dw the problem starts with the officiating.

Rambling over LOL

I was present at a track when the leader had taken the checkers and made his complete cool down lap and was stopping for Victory lane photos when the second place car rammed him(on the gas, nut just a rolling nudge) in the rear. This is a serious offense to me. Just as bad if not worse than walking up and punchin someone in the nose. I have never been on the recieving end of this kind of action and don't care to be. The crybaby bu!!!!!! needs to stop.
Tracks need to be responsible in keeping everyone safe, but UMP has the same responsibilty. Last year actions like this went almost unoticed by anyone other than who saw it. Some of these guys just need to leave thier purses at the gate with thier feelings in them. Lets just race!

Have to agree with ya. UMP could do nothing about that. The track has the responsibility to govern that behavior. UMP has the responsibility to see that tracks adhere to some common sense rulings.

Like the purse at the gate thing. LOL

Mosidebite, i am sorry that nothing was done about it. i was coming down from the flag stand when it happened. one of the officials sayed dq him, and i thought that was going to be done, but somehow it did not. i will be keeping an eye on this sort of thing. because we dont need stuff like that at the track. these drivers need to conduct themselves better, there is alot of kids watching this kind of behavior. murph

10-4 Murph. I myself would like to see things calm down before they get out of hand. Richard has the chance to really take off here in the near future.

Do not know where the responsibility lays for that error. This is what makes tracks and officials look like fools. Just have to be more professional and do the right thing. That should never have been allowed to slip by.

I think i recall seeing a letter like this for hmmmmmmmmm lets see the 2nd or 3rd year now,if they were to stick to their guns like they said last year, this letter would have never need be written this year!!!!!!!!

You are not the brightest are you!?!?!? This is a family sport & the kids are the future of the sport. I for one do not like to see it. I also hate seeing fans in the stands cursing and flipping people off in front of kids also....not to classy if you ask me.

Hey Jimmy, I need a little clarity as to the rules that you extablished and recently stated regarding name calling.

It seems that YOU and Sean2 feel free to engage in that kind of childish behavior when ever you wish, so has that rule been dropped or is it just kinda like when some of the race track officials look the other way regarding bad conduct.

Sean2, why don't you exhibit some of that class you were talking about and in the future just say, I disagree.
