UMP Sportsman point leader?

Great post!
I am new to the whole UMP thing. I am used to USRA IMCA type rules for street stocks and hobby stocks. But UMP allows tracks to run different rules for the same class to get National points? That seems to me the dumbest thing I have heard. Someone help me understand this better, the difference between the UMP sportsman, stock and factory stocks cars. Why wouldnt they want to get 1 set of rules for each class so that a guy could take his car anywhere and race. IMCA and USRA cars can go anywhere and race and not have to change anything. To me it would make more since for all the track to want this, if a track gets rained out or is off a night then guys can go elsewhere and race. I guess I just dont understand! lol

To me and I got some harsh words thrown at me over it but at the time seemed to me all ump wanted was the membership fees and really didn't care too much about this class As a hole. Since ump was bought by dirt I figured that's how things would roll . Not much has changed and once again I could be wrong also. But and I agree jimmy dearing there was alotof ruffled feathers and drivers getting mad at the thought of new rules but ill say this...doit! Ones that get mad can walk. The class needs a universal set of rules! It would let drivers go hop around for points and make the class better as a unit.

Either way best of luck to Racers For Rescues driver Jon Ripperda in his title efforts this weekend. He and his crew have been more than generous with payout and dog food donations this season. ...Bring it home man!
Great post as well and good luck to Jon! Lotta good things are said about him and seems like a great guy and a good sportsman......no pun intended lol

but really how many of those drivers in question will travel away from home for one maybe 2 times a year

Good point and i dont know. but personally id just like to see a unified set of rules put on paper. That way if i did want to travel........i could. Personally speaking. When i ran sportsmans it was the same deal and yes......there were time i did want to travel. Went to Virginia and thought of takin my car along but found out their rules were close to late models.

There are those that would travel and there are those that won't. Keep the status quo and the sportsman will wither away in this area... even at I55. The last year I ran the sportsman series there were over 100 different cars in this area... Now I'd be surprised if there are 50 to 60. The idea that drivers won't travel is just an excuse to do nothing. There needs to be a change in the mentality of the some of the sportsman drivers in this area... why can Boone put on a race where 140 Hobby Stocks and 160 sportmods show up from all over the counrty? Why can't this be done here? It isn't the money... it only pays $1000 to win for the sportmods and $600 to win for the hobby stock. It's the attitude.

Unless UMP is going to do something with the rules, i think they should just not have a national champion and pay $1500 or $2000 to win each region. I think it is dumb that the Indiana cars cant come out here, and most of the STL cars cant do to indiana, and the northern cars cant go anywhere. I have gone most of these places but it takes a lot of work. I think the sportsman class is done around here. This year, besides ripperda, nobody really ran both of the weekly tracks. I loved the sportsman class, i had 2 cars and 3 motors and sold it all off so i can race more places and not have the rules problem. I just think it is not fair people cant race EACHOTHER for a championship.

wht is the bg difference between Indiana super stocks and our sportsman also kinda tough on a class that ether the track closes or a track drops them for some other class or classes

Well, wouldn't you do the same? I really don't see how it can be fair when you run a 2800# sportsman with a 2300# mod in the same class and call them sport mods? Come on,,,UMP is all about control because someone tried to come up with a uniform set of rules a few years back and the got shut down because good 'ole UMP stuck their nose it and somehow said they sanctioned everyone into their money hungry format,,without tech guys I might add. How often have you seen a hornet, pure stock, street stock teched by a UMP official? Around here, never! Even UMP put in their rules that last year was the last time track rules would prevail! Yeah right,,,10 different tracks run 10 different sets of rules for all these classes this year and WILL continue to run them again in 2013. They are a joke and always be,,,all they are worried about is their overpriced mod and late model classes. What about Feger getting caught with doped front tires a while back and nothing happpened,,,If I were Gerstners I would be irate,,More to come if you want it. Maybe it's time for IMCA to venture south.

Well it sounds to me that it's time for UMP to s&!t or get off the lot and make a set of rules and all tracks use them. If the tracks want to go out on their own that's there problem. They will lose cars. Just think if all tracks in the area said in 2014 we are going to IMCA rules that will give drivers time to get their cars legal for that set of rules. With moberly opening back up that's another track that most likely will run USRA or IMCA type rules for street stocks and sport mods. Area tracks could even leave the A-Mod and lates alone and just changed the street stock type class. But I am sure I-55 and Tri City will not even think about change.

ALCOHOLYa must be talking bout my yellow car "2800 vs 2300" in da sportmod class,,well ya need to get your facts stright,,the rules for the b-mods at highland are 2550 with a somewhat limited motor,,if you run a former sportsman it must come in at under 2800,,thats only 250 and that is a big handy cap

Well I agree with extreme 100 percent on His idea, Also tonite at I-55 there was 45 sportsman and 40 purestocks and truthfully if you put the same bodys on all of them not many could till the difference, that would make a huge car counts for tracks that treated there racer's right, but the track owners dont want there support classes to travel anywhere but there track..with that said i doubt that the track owners want the same set of rules across the country in fear of having to kiss racers behinds and paying them well to keep them from going elsewhere. If its gonna be changed to one set of rules its gonna have to be the sportsman and purestocks drivers and car owners making it happen

kinda tough when get tracks with over 100 cars and like last night 186 cars

The people that make the decisions are not interested in changing... They all think they are smarter than the next guy. There are not enough drivers that want change to force the people that make the decicions to change their mind. And hound since this is about the sportsman class... there were 45 sportsman last night... almost half that attended this event 2 years ago...

I dont think there is a big difference in the STL vs Indiana cars moneywise. Indiana allows a 4 barrell which is a few hundred bucks more than a 2 barrell. Indiana allows pretty much open steel engines, where allied has a lot of rules they dont enforce very often. I would say you could spend as much or as little on a 410 as you could on an allied 355. Indiana allows berts and brinns, which you can buy used for 700-1000 bucks, around here you have to have a triple disk, hydraulic throw-out bearing, and 3 speed which can add up in price too. Indiana allows only stock 4 link or leaf springs, around St Louis you can run 3 link also. The Indiana tracks pay 400-600 bucks to win on a regular night, belleville and pevely pay 300 to win. Those are pretty much the differences.

saw for results was 79 mostly all local drivers and with 3 less tracks running them

Not all UMP Super LM tracks are the same. Brownstown Indiana has an open tire rule and different body rules.

Only 3 late model events at Brownstown Speedway have been UMP sanctioned this season.

March 10th, April 7th and the Summer Nationals.

That's interesting. Does that basically mean any compound and brand but no chemically altering tires? How does it seem to work cost wise?

Congrats on the championship if you are Jeremy.
