(Warrensburg, MO) Hot weather during the day on Saturday along with a warm breezy night in the Warrensburg area at Earl and Susan Walls' Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) lead to some hot racing action on the smooth clay surfaced track for week number seven of the 2009 season. A robust field of 83 drivers registered in the pits for the modifieds, ULMA late models, street stocks, and b-modifieds. Drivers were prepared for a hot night on the track and put on a good night of racing for the fans in the stands.

B-modifieds checked in with 27 drivers and started off the evening with first-time visitor Chris Whalen of KCK winning in heat race one, Independence driver, Brad Smith takes the flag in two and Lucas Isaacs, Bonner Springs, KS for his first CMS heat win this year in heat race thee. The b-main was set before intermission with five transfers including Joe Harris for his first feature win, late arriving Max Grogan from a last place start to second place finish, Troy Carlyle, Bronson Combs and Larry Williamson, Jr. Whalen and Smith led -20 starters to the line for the a-main event with Smith seizing the early lead over Whalen, Jacob Ebert and Bryan Montgomery. Montgomery ran loose in turn four and several cars bunched up with Brian Ziegler, Dalton Kirk, and Jeremy Lile experiencing mechanical problems with Kirk and Lile leaving the track. Lap 8 was a problem for the 8H of Joe Harris when he departed the track after some contact with A. J. Tice. Smith clearly led the field with some interesting battles behind him. Second place on back proved to be the best racing as Whalen, brothers Ethan and Lucas Isaacs, along with Ebert and Chris Brockway battling for positions inside the top five. In the end, no one had anything for Smith as he comfortably picked up his ninth feature at several area tracks this year. The win for Smith was his third at CMS, ahead of Ethan Isaacs, Whalen, Ebert, and Brockway in the top five. Max Grogan on a solid run comes from the b-main to finish eighth.

Brian Johnson of Independence and Michael Mullins of Kingsville won their individual heat races with 13 cars checked in the street stock division. Both drivers started on row one for the main event with Johnson advancing into the early lead around Mullins. Marc Carter of Warrensburg battled his way to the front by lap three to take second and appeared move up on Johnson later in the race when encountering lapped traffic. In the end though, it was Johnson for his second victory in a row with his third feature win at CMS this year. Carter battles the traffic and stays in second place, Mullins hangs onto third, Chad Eickleberry with a nice run from eighth came home fourth, followed by 2008 track champion, Nic Bennett in fifth.

Once again the ULMA late model class showed their highly competitive driver skills with 21 cars registered and competing in three heat races. Jason Sivils of Bolivar takes his first heat win this year at CMS along with Bob Test for his second at CMS in heat two and 2008 track champion, Jon Binning of Warrensburg taking the checkered flags for his win in heat three. As Test and Sivils led the field to the green flag for the a-main event, Bob Test was the early race leader with Sivils and Binning dicing it up close behind. After several re-starts for cautions, Kevin Kaiser takes the lead on lap 11 with a low side move around Test after a re-start. Then Binning and Test tangled in turn two sending Test to the tail of the field late in the race. Steve Clancy moved up through the field to make it into the top five early in the race from a ninth place starting position. Finally, Kaiser takes the double checkers for his first ULMA win of the season at CMS. Binning follows close behind in second with Clancy third, Danny Lorton fourth and Randy Ainsworth with a solid run completing the top five.

One of the strongest weekly fields of modified drivers made their way to the speedway and competed in three heat races; all total there were 22 'mighty' modifieds on hand. Concordia driver, Jason Thompson grabbed a big win in heat race number one with Dean Wille of Warrensburg taking the checkered flag in heat number two. Pleasant Hill driver, Ed Griggs off to a good start this year, crossed the finish line first in heat number three when he picked he up his first win in the final heat. Thompson got off to a quick start early in the feature event with Wille in a struggle for second place with Aaron Marrant. The driver on the move early on was Donnie Danner on the high side and Tim Karrick from the middle to low side from the back of the field. Thompson maintained his status as one of the smoothest drivers on the CMS high-banks and held off several strong runs by Wille and Marrant. At the finish line, a happy Jason Thompson claimed his first feature win at CMS since 2003. Wille fought hard for a well deserved second place finish. After several low-side attempts to move around Wille, defending track champion, Aaron Marrant finished third. Dave Meyer stayed in the mix as well watching the battle in front of him and finished fourth. Dennis Walrath ran another solid race and completed the top five. Hard chargers in the modified class tonight included Danner from 20th into an eighth place finish. Karrick also started 21st and finished ninth.

Join us next Saturday at CMS for a special night at the track honoring Fathers for Father’s Day.
