Ran across this video of the 1973 Figure 8 World Championship from Islip NY. I grew up attending the track mentioned by Chris Economaki, Dorsey MD Speedway. Man, I really miss Figure 8 racing, a casualty of the trend toward smaller cars from the car manufacturers.
 
I had the pleasure of knowing the pole-sitter in this race, Jack Barrass. He was a multi-time figure 8 champion at Dorsey and moved to Late Models in a few years, winning the 1979 LM title at Potomac MD Speedway over my cousin by 2 points! Passed away in a motorcycle accident a few years ago.

I have heard they have a race at the Speedrome named for a driver from MD. named Sonny Eaton, who died of a heart attack immediately after running in a 3 hour endurance Figure 8 race.
 
at the greenvill demo derby they used to have a figure 8 demo race--not sure if they have them at any other derbys---at TCs they had twin ovals where the cars would come off the half mile on to the short track and back on the half--
