WaKEENEY, Kan. (March 16) – A fifth IMCA division joins four race programs at WaKeeney Speedway this season.
Mach-1 Sport Compacts will run Sundays April 7, June 16, Aug. 25 and Sept. 15 on the 3/8-mile dirt oval.
Terry Cunningham, chairman of the WaKeeney Racing Association LLC, believes the 4-cylinder class will be an economical entry level class, particularly for young drivers.
“We have a bunch of high school kids who come to the races and sit in the stands. Sport Compacts are a division of race car they can get into with little investment,” he said. “From a promoter’s standpoint, we don’t have an entry level class now. Sport Compacts are a division people can start racing in and not spend a lot of money.”
Saturday venue RPM Speedway at Hays, 35 miles to the east, has sanctioned the class since 2010.
“They have a fairly good car count,” Cunningham noted, “and WaKeeney would give them another track to race at for IMCA points.”
IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods see their first action of 2013 at WaKeeney during the March 23 Spring Fling special.
IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing National, regional, Allstar Performance State and local track points will be awarded through Sept. 15.
WaKeeney began its association with IMCA by sanctioning the Modifieds in 1988.
