Warner signes with New York Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner signed with the New York Giants in a move that gives the team a veteran quarterback in case top draft pick Eli Manning is not ready to start this season.

Warner accepted a two-year, $9.5 million contract Thursday morning that included a $1.5 million signing bonus and a $2 million base salary for this season, ESPN.com's John Clayton reports. The second year is to be worth $6 million, but it is voidable, allowing Warner to be a free agent after the season.

In effect, Warner agreed to a one-year deal worth $3.5 million, not including incentives.

The incentives worked into the contract would significantly increase the payout in 2004 if Warner puts up exceptional statistics and takes the team to the playoffs.

"This is a great opportunity for me," Warner said. "This team is built for success. There are a lot of pieces in place to make a run for the championship now. It was that combination that made me excited about this opportunity."

Mark Bartelstein, Warner's agent, confirmed the completion of the deal Thursday but declined to discuss any of the numbers.

"This is a great fit," Bartelstein said. "Obviously Manning is there, but this is New York and if Kurt wins they are not going to want him to leave."

The Giants started last season with Super Bowl expectations and finished with a 4-12 record that led to the firing of Jim Fassel and the hiring of Tom Coughlin.

Warner was to practice with the Giants on Thursday morning and then hold a press conference.

The contract, which was completed late Wednesday night, came a little more than 24 hours after Warner was released in a salary-cap move by St. Louis. The release ended an improbable run that saw the former Arena League quarterback twice take the Rams to the Super Bowl.

Three or four other teams made contact with Bartelstein after Warner's name appeared on the waiver wire, but talks with the Giants were going along so well, both sides worked late into the night to complete the deal.

"When you have an opportunity to stockpile talent at the most important position in football, you do it," Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi said. "I only have to look back on my own history with the quarterback position to see how important it is to have quality depth there. We have the best of both worlds right now, a blend of championship experience and youthful promise."

Besides Warner and Manning, the Giants also have veteran Jesse Palmer and free agents Jared Lorenzen and Ryan Van Dyke on the roster.

The Giants waived veteran Kurt Kittner after signing Warner.

Warner comes to the Giants knowing Manning is their quarterback of the future.

"The presence of Kurt's veteran leadership is going to be a great benefit to this team, especially our young quarterbacks," Coughlin said. "As a young quarterback, you can learn an awful lot by watching how a guy like Kurt practices and prepares. It is a great learning tool."

New York traded first-round draft picks this year and next and other choices to San Diego on draft day to acquire the rights to the Mississippi quarterback who was the No. 1 pick overall in the draft.

The Giants had hoped that Kerry Collins would mentor Manning this season. But the veteran who led the Giants to a Super Bowl appearance in January 2001 refused to renegotiate a contract that would have paid him $7 million in the upcoming season.

Collins, who signed with Oakland last month, was cut days after the draft, forcing a search for a proven veteran.

Warner, who will turn 33 on June 22, is that. He led the Rams to Super Bowls in the 1999 and 2001 seasons, but has been plagued by injuries since.

His days in St. Louis were numbered once Marc Bulger was given a four-year, $19.1 million contract.

The Rams gave Warner permission to shop himself, knowing he would be released June 1. Warner met with the Giants last month.

Warner has battled injuries the last two years. He missed half of the 2002 season with hand injuries. He lost his starting job last season after sustaining a concussion in a season-opening loss to the Giants.

Warner hasn't won a game as a starter since the 2001 season, when he led the Rams to a 14-2 record. New England upset St. Louis in the Super Bowl, denying Warner a second title.

Warner led St. Louis to a title when the Rams beat Tennessee in Super Bowl XXXIV.

Hope he remmebers to take his wife..lol. Anyone wh has any dealings with those 2 can tell you..she definately runs her mouth..ahhhh...runs the show. Hop he finds better fortune there.

It's a horrible shame to lose a player and a man the quality of Kurt Warner. He's a credit to his sport and to the human race. Kurt Warner brought more attention to the St. Louis area than ANY other athlete or driver EVER. He will be sadly missed.

I Agree !!!!!

Millsy I agree with you. Look what he did for the charities in the STL. Area.
And I thought he was a GREAT role model for our children today as to other football players getting away with murder then getting and MVP for the Super Bowl. Yep we WERE LUCKY to have that type of class in STL. :)

The wrong people were chased out of town, in a perfect world Brenda Warner and Mike Martz and his ego should have been sent packing. The fans that wanted Warner gone, did not have to suffer through the days of Big Red Football. Having been a Cardinal football fan I suffered through the days of Jim Hart and Neil Lomax, the years when our team won maybe 4-5 games. So it's hard for me to forget what the guy did, winning a Super Bowl and 2 MVP's. Not only that but what he did in the community was first rate, but in todays game I guess to stay apart of a team you have to be caught drunk driving for the second time (the first time resulted in death) aka Leonard Little, or be involved in drug scandles.

Now I have to say words that I thought would never come out of my mouth, GO New York Giants, because I would love nothing more than for Kurt to put it in Martz's a**!

I agree..he did lots of charity stuff around here..and a very good role model. His wfe got him in trouble..constantly..and thats a shame. Mike Martz didnt budge either..so..maybe Mark Bulger can step it up..play good..and do those things too for charities

When did Kurt Warner come to Belleville or I-55? What car did he drive? If he was in Belleville I missed him! I am there every Friday night! Maybe since he cant play football anymore and Thank God for the GIANTS for taking him off our hands.....maybe racing wouldnt be a bad sport for him?????? (Just my opinion)

Stlracing is a community of people that are more than just race fans. We recently used this very forum for a young boy dying of cancer. Other than him being a race fan his illness had nothing to do with racing. If you don't like reading things that don't pertain to racing, don't open the thread. And until Jimmy D. say's otherwise and moves threads such as these to a different place I think this is what you should do.

44fanclub whatever, you have been on here for a total of three posts, 1 to bash Ed Dixon without a clue as to the facts (the owner and moderator of this site had to fill you in on that one) the second post was to tell us all how we should behave at the track, who should go where, etc, and now this post ripping on Kurt Warner. I got news for you. SHUT UP! We are not amused with people like you who use this site to complain about drivers, their families, their pit crews, local celebrities who have done so much for the St Louis community as a whole, or other members of this board who have been here a lot longer than you. If all you can contribute is griping, dont post.

My name is Todd Niemann, and I approved this post.

You hit the nail right on the head!

Ticks me off that we as a community can fight about racing all day long. But when someone wants to talk about something else there's always someone there to start a fight about that too. Last time I checked there are several people in this forum who are friends here, and at the track, and away from racing. So why can't a group of friends have a conversation in the forum that brought them together? If you don't like the subject matter, find another subject. If that's not good enough either, find another forum!

44fanclub loosen your panties up there just a little sport. If you don't like the post then move on to the next one. If Jimmy D. says to only talk racing then so be it, but I've seen topics discussed that had nothing to do with racing. Geez thank goodness that's not the policy, because Laura and I would of not had the opportunity to introduce Jacob to the website and so many special things wouldn't of happened to our pal. The wonderful things that he experienced had alot to do with the people from stlracing.

44Fanclub, I know President Reagan didn't race either but hopefully it's ok that I say he passed away today. NOW back to racing.

We had a moment of silence last night at the track for President Reagan. He was a great man and a true American.

For those who are keeping track of my posts...this is #4.
As far as the Dixon post I made...I was curious as to why this was the 1st time that I had watched Jr. Fan Club and he did not show up to give the child a ride. I was simply asking a question of here...no bashing at all. Thank you J Dearing for answering that for me.
As far as the pit post.......Alot of the FANS go to the pits after a good night of racing...those FANS are mostly CHILDREN. I personally DO NOT WANT TO bring my child down to the pit area when the fighting and cursing is still going on. If you think the fighting should be continuing on during the "visits" to the drivers then that doesnt say much about you or how you care about your child's safety.
As far as the Warner post.....It was my opinion...Everyone is entitled to one...When do I have to follow and agree with your opinions?
I am a very opinionated person.....I may step on a few toes now and again. If I do..I am sure if J Dearing DOESNT like my opinion of posts, he will tell me otherwise.

If YOU dont like my posts......DONT READ THEM.....
