(Batesville, AR) Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR captured his second “Masters” title this past weekend at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, WI. In only five runnings of the “Masters,” Wendell has been able to win two of them, this one worth nearly $21,000. This year’s edition featured a three segment all-star event similar to that of NASCAR’s version of “The Winston.” The Xtreme DirtCar Series-sanctioned event was held this past Friday and Saturday and was broadcast live on the Internet. The race will also be shown on the SPEED Channel on July 10 at 9 p.m. E.S.T.

On Friday night, Wendell was able to win his heat race aboard the J&J Steel / MSE Distributing #88 GRT / Craft Ford Taurus. This allowed him to compete in a dash with the other ten heat winners to determine the first five rows of the “Masters.” Wendell went on to finish third in the dash, which gave him an inside second row starting spot for the big race on Saturday.

In the first 40-lap segment of the “Masters,” Wendell rode comfortably in the top ten throughout the segment and easily made the top 18 requirement to advance to the second 40-lap segment. The track began to take rubber about halfway through the second segment and Wendell started to drop back. The reason was not because of the track, but because of a dropped cylinder in his Keith Craft Ford powerplant. Wendell would hang on to 11th place in the second segment, which barely made the top 12 requirement to advance to the third and final 20-lap segment.

The team caught a break when a fan spun the “inversion wheel” and it landed on the “Field.” That meant that Wendell would start the last segment from the outside of the front row. Even with only seven cylinders, Wendell was able to lead all twenty laps and win the race by a decided margin. “We needed this race really bad,” said Wendell after the event. “We have been pretty bad this year so far, but hopefully that monkey fell off in a big way tonight. We weren’t even going to go out for the last segment because of the motor, but then when we heard they were going to invert the field, we just put some gear in it and ended up winning the race.”

Wendell Wallace Autosports will try to keep that monkey from crawling back on their back this week when they compete in the UMP Summernational events. The team is going to try to compete in the grueling series that features 26 races at 26 different tracks in only 28 days. “We are going to try to run all the events until we get burned out or we burn up,” said Wendell in reference to the trailer fire they had at a Summernationals event in Vernon, IN last year. The action kicks off in this year’s edition at Shawano Speedway in Shawano, WI tonight and will continue until a champion is crowned at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, OH on July 19. This week will feature races at Shawano (WI) Speedway, Hales Corner (WI) Speedway, LaSalle (IL) Speedway, Crown Point (IN) Speedway, Kankakee (IL) Motor Speedway, American Legion (IL) Speedway, and Tri-State (IN) Speedway.
