Mt. Vernon, IL (July 7, 2003) Wendell Wallace only lead the feature for about 500 feet during the UMP Summer Nationals event at Mt. Vernon Raceway, but it was the final 500 feet to the checkered flag. Wallace started on the inside of the second row in the 40 lap main event. Pole sitter Don O'Neal jumped out front and led the first 39 3/4 laps with Wallace right on his bumper for the final 35 laps. The track had taken rubber and the fast line was right on the bottom, so just about every car in the feature was running around the bottom. At the end, the two leaders were stacked up behind heavy lapped traffic and were unable to move past. Going into the turn three on the final lap, O'Neal left a small opening and Wallace drove in deep under O'Neal with the two cars bumping, Wallace accelerated off the bottom and beat O'Neal back to the line to pick up the win.

Billy Drake continued his consistancy during the Summer Nationals with a third place finish. Shannon Babb moved up from his eighth place starting position to finish fourth. Randy Korte rounded out the top five.

The fireworks came after the race in the pit area as the teams of O'Neal and Wallace had some heated discussions over the last lap pass.
