Hartford, Kentucky's Jimmy Westerfield clinched his 3rd Kentucky State Championship in the DIRT Motorsports, UMP Modified division just one week ago. All eyes have been on Westerfield with his stellar performances over the last half of the season. Westerfield had captured 4 feature events in a row at Soggy Bottom Speedway in Morgantown, Kentucky going into this past weekends NARA Battle of the Bluegrass Series "Battle of the Bottom".

Westerfield had high hopes of being able to add his name to the list of drivers that have won the "Battle" in its seventh year running. Westerfield's evening started off on a bad foot when transmission problems plagued the M1 team during qualifying. The team rallied to repair the transmission to run their heat event. Yet again the monkey jumped on Westerfield's back in the heat as rear suspension problems brought him in with a DNF. Knowing that a provisional starting spot was available to him for the feature event, the team again scrambled to patch his mount together and try the car out during the "B" main. Westerfield shook his car down and made adjustments and started 20th on the field of 21.

Jimmy got up on the wheel knowing he had his work cut out for him with the strong competition that was in the field. Within 10 laps Westerfield had marched into the top 5.

With just 4 laps remaining Westerfield used the top of the track to his advantage like he had nearly every lap of the 40 lap feature event to blast past Russell Childress for the lead and the win. Westerfield wheeled his WT Harris chassis named "Haley's Comet" powered by Brannon Performance and sponsored by Westerfield's Body Shop & Towing, Texas Roadhouse, Deals on Wheels, 4D Environmental, Bilstein Shocks, Hurst Racing Carburetors, Bill Ballard Landscaping, Special Event Rentals, EZ Graphics and Egeler Promotions to his 9th win of 2005. The "Hartford Hitman" was also able to add his 2nd Soggy Bottom Speedway Modified championship to his resume over the past week. This is back to back championships for the M1 team at Soggy Bottom and makes his 5th track championship in the ever competitive modified division.

Westerfield also did battle at Windy Hollow Speedway over the weekend recording a win in the Quick 6 dash for the modifieds and holding on for 2nd in the feature event.

This week Westerfield Racing will be making the long haul to Rossburg, OH to the famed Eldora Speedway, owned by Nextel Cup driver Tony Stewart, for the DIRT Motorsports UMP Fall Nationals where he will not only compete in the "State Champions Race" but also in the "Chassis Manufacturers Race" and try to work his way into the main event. Westerfield currently sits 24th in the National points standing could move his way into the top 20 with a good run at Eldora. Westerfield has blasted around the 1/2 mile clay playground for power before and picked up a win in 2002 at this track during his 1st Kentucky State Championship season. Car from all over the country will invade Eldora this weekend for the Saturday and Sunday event. The 3 state championship makes Westerfield the only driver in the state of Kentucky to win 3 state championships.
