Dean Wille pulled off a rare double-victory in modified main event action on the same night and went home with one of the largest single night payouts in CMS history. He captured not only the weekly regular points race win but also flew the checkers in the 40-lap Tom Wilson Memorial race, which paid a lofty 2,000 dollars to win! Wille’s feat was very impressive as there were 47 modifieds on hand that he had to fend off, pass and race against. Saturday night’s racing action proved yet again that you would be hard pressed to find another track that can boast such a competitive and talented field of modified drivers.

This week’s temperatures were much nicer than recent weeks and the fans came out in droves to witness 103 cars compete in four divisions. On the original Tom Wilson Memorial race night all the heat races were completed; however, the B-main and feature races were rained out. The program on this night got off to an unusual start because of the aforementioned rain-out as the modifieds took to the track to run the make-up B-main. The top 6 from the B-main went on to transfer to the 40-lap race, bringing the Tom Wilson Memorial race starting field to a total of 24; only one competitor previously signed in did not return on this night. Tyler Hibner won the B-main over Terry Schultz and Bubba Harvey. Ryan Lovercamp, Chad Staus and Alan Deatherage also transferred to the big race.

With a full program already having been run for the night, the excitement was at its peak when the 23-car starting field for the Tom Wilson Memorial race took to the track for 40 big laps. Front-row starters Dustin Boney and Mark Dotson brought the field to Hershel Thompson’s green flag and the intense racing action consumed the loyal CMS fans right until the checkered flag flew. Right from the start in turn one the field found trouble as the yellow flag flew for a spinning Dotson, James McMillin and Steve Hammons. All cars were able to return to the race but had to restart the race at the tail of the field. Once the race got back to green-flag conditions it was Boney who got out to an early lead on James McMillin and Dennis Walrath. Boney was leading the field at a torrid pace as McMillin and company could not close the gap on him. On lap 18 Chad Staus clipped the front-stretch tires ending his night and bringing out the second caution flag of the race. On the restart Boney once again distanced himself from the field as McMillin, and now Curt Potter, Walrath, Wille and Gary Blackburn, Jr., ran in the top six. The caution flew again on lap 22 when Tyler Hibner was involved in another yellow flag, his second yellow flag incident, forcing him to retire from the race early. By the lap 23 restart, Wille began to show some force and was battling with Boney for the lead. Lap after lap these two battled side-by-side in what was some of the most exciting racing laps at CMS in recent memory. Jim Moody, who had worked his way up to 4th from his 15th starting spot, also clipped the turn one large white tire ending his night with left-front tire damage. By this time, Wille had wrestled the lead away from Boney, having methodically worked his way up from his fourth-place starting spot. From here on out it was all Wille for the lead, but behind him it was a classic battle between Chad Lyle and Boney for second. Chasing Wille to the finish line was Lyle, Blackburn, McMillin, Tom Charles all the way from 17th starting spot, and Curt Potter to round out the top six. A post-race disqualification was given to Dustin Boney by the CMS track officials and he was not scored for the event. This was Wille’s fourth main event win of the year and second main event win on the same night!

The regular racing program line-up of events was changed to accommodate the previously mentioned 40-lap Tom Wilson Memorial race. The modifieds were first to take to the track for 6 exciting heat races and 2 B-main events in order to determine the starting line-up for the A-main. Steve Hammons, Dennis Walrath, Joe Bradshaw, Jim Moody, Sonny Wood and Dean Wille were all victorious in heat-race action. The Hibner brothers, Lonnie and Lee, took home the wins in the B-mains. Only the top three from each heat and top three from the B-mains transferred to the main event, along with one provisional starter to complete the 25-car starting line-up. Steve Hammons of Pleasant Hill and the ‘Clinton Missile,’ Dennis Walrath led the field to the green for the start. Walrath jumped out to an early lead until a spinning Tom ‘the Rooster’ Charles, Steve Potter and James McMillin brought out the caution on lap four. All the cars involved were able to continue but were relegated to the tail of the field on the restart. By lap ten Walrath began to feel pressure from Wille as the Warrensburg driver made his way to second from his sixth starting position. Kyle Westerhold, Jim Moody, Chad Lyle, Curt Potter and Tyler Hibner all experienced mechanical woes and left the race as Wille and Walrath continued their battle. On lap 16 the side-by-side battle between Wille and Walrath saw Wille finally grab the lead. Not long after Wille took the lead the final caution flew when Lonnie Hibner spun on the back straightaway. Walrath tried to retake the lead from Wille but couldn’t quite get it done as Wille went on to take the win over Walrath. Steve Hammons ran his best main event of the year and brought his machine home in third. Point’s leader Gary Blackburn, Jr., of Fulton was fourth, ‘Mighty’ Joe Bradshaw came in fifth and Dustin Boney of DeSoto, KS, rounded out the top six.

For the Street Stock division it took four heat races and one B-main with the top four finishers from each the heats and B-main events determining who would make it to the A-main. Jimmy Ngo, Nathan Himes, Chad Eickleberry and Gary Hemme took the heat wins as point’s leader Wayne Harper had to settle for a win and a transfer spot via the B-main. At the drop of the green for the 15-lap main event, it was Jimmy Ngo of Independence and Clinton’s Nathan Himes who led the field into turn one. Right after the green flag flew Gary Hemme once again experienced bad luck and was forced to leave the event with mechanical woes. Billy Huffmaster and Phil Wright were also out of this one early as were Michael Mullins and Raytown’s Brett Nail. Jimmy Ngo was on the go from the start as he held back the charges of Nathan Himes and Marc Carter early on. The three drivers battled side-by-side for a few laps until Carter wrestled the lead away from Ngo and went on to take his eighth A-main event win of the year. No other driver in any class has more main event wins than Carter. Ngo held on for second in front of Himes. Warrensburg’s Chad Eickleberry was fourth at the line followed by Bobby Raybourn of Odessa, who had another solid top-five run in the fifth spot as he made an exciting last-lap pass on point’s leader Wayne Harper, who came all the way from the 17th starting position to take home sixth place.

Up next was the Limited Late Models. With another large field of limiteds on hand, it took three heat races to sort out the field for the A-main. ‘Jammin’ Jimmy Morris of Blue Springs, Jason Estes of Winston and Danny Monroe of Jamestown all took home heat-race wins. Ever since the CMS promoters announced a larger payout scale for the limiteds, there have been many cars in attendance, which has sometimes led to on-track troubles as new-to-the-track drivers get used to the CMS surface and track layout. Although there was one incident that saw the red flag fly for Shad Badder’s car ending up on top of Kevin ‘the Kid’ Coyne’s car, the race itself was a vast improvement over previous weeks and saw exciting battles throughout the field in every position. Monroe and Estes led the field to the green with Monroe quickly getting out to the lead early. Fresh off his run with the World of Outlaw super late models, Ashland’s Virgil Jeffery grabbed the lead from Monroe on lap five as point’s leader David Gemes, Brett Rollert and a hard-charging Jeff Schlup all battled with Monroe for second. A caution on lap ten for a spinning George Jacobs re-bunched the field for the re-start but not before Lance Elwell retired with mechanical woes and Brett Rollert spun, leading to his going to the tail of the field on the restart. At the drop of the green for the restart, Jeffery once again tried to get away from the rest of the field as by this time Jeff Schlup had found his way around Monroe and Gemes and was now in second. Schlup, already a four-time winner in limited main event action, found the quick line around the speedway and made the pass to take the lead with two laps remaining. The California, MO, native went on to take his fifth main event win of the year over Jeffery. Monroe came across the line in third, with Odessa’s Steven Clancy fourth and the Gemes brothers, David and Donnie in fifth and sixth.

The 305 Sprint Cars were up next as eight drivers were on hand for two heat races. Point’s leader Michael Brown and Harrisonville’s Kenny Potter taking the heat-race wins. Potter and Brown were on the front row of the A-main with Potter getting out to an early lead prior to a complete restart. Brown also found himself a victim of turn one’s big white tire as he came a little too close and clipped it, causing left front damage and leading to his retirement from the event. Kevin Roth found himself completing a double 360 spinout out off of turn four as the caution was flown to regroup the field for a restart. Rob Hockett quickly got off to an early lead once the green flag flew with Potter and Grain Valley’s Terry Moore giving chase in second and third. Hockett was the class of the field on this night and went on to take the win, his second straight, over Potter in second, a hard-charging Will Pierce was third, with Moore, Belton’s Dan Chevalier and Lone Jack’s Kevin Roth rounding out the top six.
