The Racing Lawyer, Denny Woodworth laid down the law at Quincy Raceways Sunday night in dominating fashion. Woodworth made his outside front row starting spot pay off and he repelled the challenges of first Jay Holler then Thad Trump and finally Jamie Wilson to take his first Budweiser IMCA Late Model Feature event win at Quincy Raceways in 2003. Jay Holler and Mark Burgtorf took the heat race wins while Thad Trump grabbed the Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash victory.
Bob Dale looked like he may have had the Miller Lite A-Modified feature event well in control until the 14th circuit of the 20 lapper. Dale lost the top spot to a hard charging Michael Long who came from the 5th row by cruising by the field on the extremely fast top groove. Long pulled away for the win with Dale settling for second, Jimbo Powell in third, Mark Van Winkle in fourth and Ryan Meyer in fifth. Van Winkle and Long swept up the heat race wins.
The sometimes unruly B-Modifieds finally got all 20 laps completed in their feature event that was hampered by only two yellow flags. This week a new procedure was instituted as the the field was put into single file after one attempt at a green flag start which goes yellow. The new procedure seemed to work as the competitors spread out after a first lap caution and ran almost all the way to the checkered flag with only one more caution coming out on the 16th circuit. Wes Mayfield jumped into the lead at the drop on the single file green flag and held off all the field to take his first win of the season. The action behind Mayfield was hot and heavy as the top points runners moved up to challenge for the top spots late in the race. Wyatt Lance claimed second with Jim Leffew in third, Michael Bliven in fourth and David Wietholder in fifth. Wietholder, Lefew and Tony Dunker were the heat race winners while Bliven claimed the hardware in the P&S Auto And Truck Collision Repair Trophy Dash.
The six yellow flags thrown in the Bomber feature cut short the laps in the scheduled 20 lapper but they did not cut short the action as Bobby Uppinghouse Jr. came from his third row starting spot to take his first feature event win of 2003. Uppinghouse started challenging for the lead on the fourth lap and was joined by Eddie Dieker the next lap to make it a three way duel with Joe Mickels. Mickels kept Uppinghouse and Dieker at bay until the 9 circuit when Uppinghouse got by with Dieker following to take the lead. Uppinhouse held off Dieker the rest of the way to take the win with Dieker settling for second. Steve Carlin claimed third, Bill Genenbacher fourth and Mickels rounding out the top 5. Jim Powell, Uppinghouse Jr. and Jeff Delonjay saw the checkered flags first in the heat races with Brent Chapman taking first in the B-Main event.
Quincy Raceways will have a very busy race schedule this week as the Thirsty Thursday starts Thursday night, June 5 t featuring the 2 Man Cruisers, 4 Bangers and the New Truck Wars Series. Friday night, June 6 the AMA Flat Track Motorcycles take on the quarter mile oval. Points racing in the stock cars continues on Sunday, June 8 with Area Volunteer Fireman Night at the Races.
