DOC’S HARLEY-DAVIDSON WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MOTORCYCLE ICE RACING BLASTS INTO THE FAMILY ARENA ON DECEMBER 28

By Tricia Anagnos
ST. CHARLES, MO (November 15) – Ice racers from all over the globe will ride into the Family Arena on nitromethane-powered speedway motorcycles and quad/ATVs to compete for the World Cup. The arena welcomes this extreme motor sport back for the third consecutive year. This year all of the danger and wheel-to-wheel action of the 2003 World Cup Ice Speedway Championship Series will be packed into one night only, Saturday, December 28 at 8:00 p.m.

Professional speedway racers from the United States, Canada, Europe, and South Africa travel here to tear across the ice in a battle of lightening speed and tremendous balance for this sport’s biggest event! More than twenty races will be contested in less than three hours to crown champions in each division.

Three-time World Cup Champion Anthony “British Bulldog” Barlow returns to defend his title. Joining him to kick up some snow and avoid collision with dasher walls, is Mandy Lynn “Wild Child” Brodil, the first woman ever to win a World Cup Champion Event, Louis “Taz Man” Smith who is trying to regain the World Champion status that he enjoyed from 1999-2001, and about two dozen other top athletes.

“I do it for the adrenaline rush and to win. Just to step over the bike, you’ve got to be a daredevil. People like to watch us complete a run, and they love to see a crash. We’ll show you that ice isn’t just for hockey, the popularity of this winter sport is definitely catching on,” says Barlow of the Championship series. The last two years that the Family Arena hosted this event, the stands were nearly sold out.

International Championship Events (I.C.E.) was founded in 1977 to organize and promote indoor speedway ice racing. This exciting sport has evolved in the last 26 years, but the bikes have remained relatively basic, so the contest remains a true test of the riders’ guts and skills. Speedway bikes cannot utilize shock absorbers and have seats just big enough to support the rider. Anthony Barlow describes his racer as a “1200cc crotch rocket on a mountain bike frame with 400 studs in the front tire, 800 in the back”.

The World Speedway Racing Association adheres to three very strict rules - all vehicles must be equipped with a dead man’s switch (an ignition switch that shuts off the engine when the rider separates from the machine), tires need regulation steel studs, and absolutely no brakes allowed on competing motorcycles. However, in the crowd-pleasing Unlimited Outlaw Quad Races there are virtually no rules regarding engine size or fuel type.

These bikes can go from 0-60 mph in less than three seconds, but the tickets may go even faster. St. Louis racing enthusiasts have their first chance to purchase tickets on November 20 at 10 a.m. Tickets are available at the Family Arena Ticket Office, all MetroTix locations, by phone at 314-534-1111 or online at www.MetroTix.com.

Tickets purchased in advance are $14 and $20 for VIP. The day of the show tickets will be $16 and $22 for VIP. Service fees may apply and only a limited number of tickets will be available. With the purchase of one adult ticket, guests can purchase tickets for children aged 12 and under at half price (excluding VIP seats). For more information about World Championship Motorcycle Ice Racing, visit www.icespeedway.com, or call the Family Arena Event Hotline at 636-896-4242.

The Family Arena is located just ten minutes west of the Lambert-St. Louis International Airport off I-70. Take the Fifth Street South exit and follow the signs to Arena Parkway.

The Family Arena is home to the Missouri River Otters of the United Hockey League, the Show-Me Believers of the United Indoor Football League, and the St. Louis Quest, a member of United States Professional Volleyball.
