WHAT
• After opening the season on several different big half-miles, the
World of Outlaws Sprint Series is about to get its elbows up and invade
two quarter-mile ovals that offer very different challenges. Tri-State
Speedway, where the Mean 15 racers compete in a $51,600 event on
Saturday, April 15, is a paper-clip quarter-mile where the
850-horsepower World of Outlaws winged sprint cars go all out on the
straightaways before tiptoeing through the turns and bringing the crowd
to its feet with wheelies as they square up for the next straight.
Then on Friday, April 21, the World of Outlaws roll into Lawrenceburg
Speedway to open the City of Lawrenceburg Sprint Nationals and battle
the All Star Circuit of Champions on a nearly circular quarter-mile in
another $51,600 show where momentum is key to winning but a challenge
to accomplish with 24 cars all fighting for the same real estate. In
either case, the events will be extremely exciting as the close
quarters racing always leads to incredible edge-of-your-seat action.

WHEN
• On Saturday, April 15, at Tri-State Speedway, the pits will open at 3
p.m. with the grandstands opening at 4 p.m. and qualifying kicking off
the on-track action at 6:30 p.m.

2 p.m. with grandstands opening at 4 p.m. and racing at 7:30 p.m.

races of the 2005 season, the World of Outlaws had a total car count of
339 cars for an average of 34 competitors per event.

• Tickets on sale: Tickets are on sale for many of the upcoming World
of Outlaws events, and fans are encouraged to check out the race
track’s Web sites for details. SLS Promotions is gearing up to promote
several races beginning with the April 21 City of Lawrenceburg Sprint

of Champions Winged Challenge at legendary Lawrenceburg (Ind.)
Speedway. … Tickets also are available for the inaugural Missouri
High-Bank Nationals May 5 at the ultrafast U.S. 36 Raceway in Osborn,
Mo., where Mean 15 racer Terry McCarl owns the astonishing single-lap
record of 9.91 seconds on the 3/8-mile clay oval. … The next night,
Saturday, May 6, the crew travels down to C. Ray Hall’s historic 81
Speedway for the Third Annual Wichita Twister Showdown, won last year

the Red River Valley Fair in West Fargo, N.D., also are on sale. The
June 16-17 Duel will be tri-sanctioned with the All Stars and NOSA
adding their stars and cars to the field for an incredibly competitive
event that SLS is truly proud to be part of this in 2006. … Also, seats
are now available to the PolyDome Princeton Nationals on July 28-29 at
Princeton Speedway in Princeton, Minn. … To purchase tickets to these
events, contact SLS Promotions at 815-344-2023 on Monday through
Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central or go to http://www.slspromotions for
more information.

• Party time: The City of Lawrenceburg Sprint Nationals figures to be a
non-stop party built around some exciting racing at the historic
quarter-mile Lawrenceburg Speedway near Cincinnati. A pre-race party on
Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Downtown Lawrenceburg on Walnut
Street will get things rolling as Craig Dollansky and his Karavan
Trailers Maxim and Terry McCarl and his Big Game Treestands Eagle will
be there to jump start the action. The party then will shift to the
Hoosier Wings and Rings restaurant, which will have specials for fans
each day during the event. The World of Outlaws will battle with the
All Star Circuit of Champions on Friday, April 21, with USAC wingless
sprints taking to the track on Saturday, April 22. For tickets to the
Friday night event, call SLS Promotions at 815-344-2023.

• Supporting Knoxville: Before the World of Outlaws roll into the pits
on April 29 at Knoxville Raceway, several drivers will be around the
region to meet-and-greet fans. Brooke Tatnell and Terry McCarl, who
also will be bringing his No. 24 Big Game Treestands Eagle, will be
among the racers signing autographs from noon to 2 p.m. on April 29 at
South Ridge Mall in Des Moines. … In addition to the mall signing on
April 29, Justin Henderson’s Race Girl/Jolt Energy Gum Schnee will be
at the Kum & Go station next to Knoxville Raceway during the day. The
following day, April 30, fans can follow the World of Outlaws as the
series rolls north to Brandon, S.D., for its first of two events this
season at Huset’s Speedway.

• The $50,000 Challenge: World of Outlaws races at Lernerville Speedway
and Sharon Speedway normally are quite competitive, but wait until a
$50,000 bonus is on the line. The winner of the May 19 Commonwealth
Clash will have the option to start from the rear of the A-main the
following night, May 20, at Sharon Speedway. If that driver can win the
40-lap event at Sharon, a bonus of $50,000 will be added to the
winner’s $10,000 check. A driver who wins both events and The $50,000
Challenge will pocket $70,000 — a nice way to warm up for the Month of
Money.

• Martin’s new site: Jason Martin still is recuperating from injuries
sustained in February at East Bay Raceway Park, but that doesn’t mean
the native of Liberal, Kan., has not been busy. The Hitman continues to
be on the road working with the team and now has launched a new Web
site (http://www.jasonmartinmotorsports) with the help of HostIowa.net.
The new site is fan friendly and will soon have a place where fans can
order Hitman and Mafia Motorsports merchandise as well as NOS Energy
Drinks. A new feature will include real-time updates from the track
when the team is in action, as well as photos. While Martin recovers,
Rob Chaney has been handling driving duties. … Martin could be back in
the car as early as the April 29 event Knoxville Raceway. Doctors are
encouraged by the strength in Martin’s neck as well as his recovery and
attention to the injury. He wants to be 100 percent healthy when he
climbs back into the NOS Energy Drinks/Mafia Motorsports #36 Maxim
powered by Kriner. “Yeah I want back in the seat,” Martin said. “But I
also know at this level you have to be 100 percent. I am real close and
feel great but I am not climbing back in the car until the doctors give
me the green light. Rob has done a great job for us and we are thankful
for the performance. The frustrating thing is just watching my car on
the track. When I get back in, it will be when I am 100 percent
physically — the mental part is already there.”

QUOTABLE
The World of Outlaws Mean 15 racers have raced seven times this season
on high-speed half-mile ovals and offer their thoughts below about
switching their efforts the next two weeks to racing at quarter-mile
Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind., near Evansville and quarter-mile
Lawrenceburg Speedway in Lawrenceburg, Ind., near Cincinnati

Becca Anderson, driver of the No. 19 Woodring Racing JEI
• On racing at quarter miles: “I think it’s going to be exciting to get
to the quarter-miles. It’s going to be a lot more racy. It’s still
going to be wide-open racing, but I think it’s going to be more
beneficial for us. We don’t really have the killer motors so I think
it’s going to put us a little more in the hunt. We’ve been definitely
struggling in time trials so hopefully we’ll be making some shows now.”

Jeremy Campbell, driver of the No. 10C Americas Best Value Inn Maxim
• On racing at quarter miles: “Lawrenceburg the last couple of times
I’ve been there with the All Stars I’ve been quick time so I’m really
looking forward to Lawrenceburg. I love that place. A lot of people
don’t like it because it’s rough and out-of-control, but that thing is
awesome. … I’ve had good experience at both. Haubstadt will get dry
slick and you can do some slide jobs. You can slide it in there and get
some awesome passing going on. The last time I was at both of those
tracks I finished in the top five. I really like racing on them.
They’re fun.”

Brian Carlson, driver of the No. 18 Lincoln Electric Maxim
• On racing at quarter miles: “It’s nice being home, first off.
Lawrenceburg and Haubstadt are a couple of places where I cut my teeth
at. It takes more of the motor out of the equation. It’s still
important to qualify well, but it’s not just an all-horsepower deal.
You’ve got to be able to finesse the car and get your elbows up and
race somebody hard. A place like Eldora or Williams Grove it’s like
pull in and hook the motor to a dyno and see who has the best power
that night. The quarter-miles make it a little more of a fair game for
the guys who don’t have quite as big motors. It gives you closer racing
action instead of follow-the-leader stuff that sometimes the bigger
tracks do. It’s nice to get back to little tracks and really be able to
drive the racecar.”

Rob Chaney, driver of the Mean 15 No. 36 NOS Energy Drink/Mafia
Motorsports Maxim while Jason Martin recovers from injuries sustained
in a crash at East Bay Raceway Park
• On racing at quarter miles: “That’s really a good thing because you
get out-horsepowered all the time on these big tracks. It’s nice to go
to the small tracks where you can maybe time a little better because
your car is better or you drive better laps than a guy who has more
horsepower than you.”
“I’ve had a lot of fun. We haven’t run as good as I’d hoped to, but
that’s a part of the sport. If it was easy everybody would do it. We’re
having a lot of fun. Hopefully we can get these guys some good finishes
before Jason comes back. I wish these guys all the best because they’ve
treated me like a king.”

Craig Dollansky, driver of the No. 7 Karavan Trailers Maxim
• On racing at quarter miles: “I’ll tell you what, I enjoy the short
tracks as much as the big tracks. They’re always fun to race and a lot
of stuff goes on there. … There’s a lot of things that come into play
on a short track. It’s not as much motor as it is how your car is
handling. You have to cowboy it around there a lot of times. They’re
fun to race.”

Randy Hannagan, driver of the No. 1X Terry Hannagan Racing Maxim
• On racing at quarter miles: “I’m looking forward to it because it
makes you race for it. A lot of times, like at Eldora, your qualifying
is so important but motors are so important and your setup and fuel
curve on your motor, a lot of the things people don’t know about are so
critical that make a difference between a tenth or two where you can
get on a quarter-mile and cowboy up and make up the difference. I’m
looking forward to it. We’ve run a lot of quarter-miles in the past,
especially at Haubstadt and Lawrenceburg. It’s good racing, and that’s
the best thing for the fans.”

Jac Haudenschild, driver of the No. 35 Wright One Construction Maxim
• On racing at quarter miles: “Short tracks are really racy. You’re
always in traffic. They’re a lot tighter. It’s really good racing. The
half miles are a lot wider and faster, you got a little bit more room.
I like them both.”

Justin Henderson, driver of the No. D1 Jolt Energy Gum/Race Girl Schnee
powered by Hollywood Engines
• On racing at quarter miles: “I really like the little bullrings.
They’re my favorite type of racetrack, actually. The only way to pass
people sometimes is to run into each other so it makes for a real
exciting race for the fans. I like to cowboy-up, run it on two wheels,
especially when they get rough and you’ve got to move the right rears
out and run them a lot harder. It separates the men from the boys just
like these big fast tracks do, too. We’ll see if I learned a lot from
when I was running back home and see what I can do.”

Dion Hindi, driver of the No. 11D RealTruck.com/Snipertuning J&J
• On racing at quarter miles: “People always talk about them not being
horsepower tracks, but every track is a horsepower track. At Haubstadt,
it’s a little paper clip. You go to the end of the straightaway and
turn 180 degrees and stand back on the throttle and you’ve got to have
the power to get out of the corner. A quarter-mile track is more what
I’m used to racing on back home. If there’s a track with a good cushion
and a good bottom, when it turns into a racetrack like Haubstadt
usually does, then we roll around it pretty good.”

Chad Kemenah, driver of the No. 15K Underground Utilities Inc. Eagle
• On racing at quarter miles: “It’s definitely different. I like
Haubstadt. That’s a pretty neat little racetrack and it gets racy. Big
tracks or small tracks, it doesn’t matter to me, as long as you keep
your nose clean usually you’re all right.”

Jason Martin, driver of the No. 36 NOS Energy Drink/Mafia Motorsports
Maxim who is recovering from injuries sustained in an early season
crash. Eldora veteran Rob Chaney will pilot the car this weekend
• On racing at quarter miles: “I think quarter miles will be more to
our benefit because it’s not so much a horsepower deal. It costs a lot
of money to build those horsepower motors so I think we’ll be right in
the ballgame at those tracks. We’ll get our car dialed in and go.”

Terry McCarl, driver of the No. 24 Big Game Treestands Eagle
• On racing at quarter miles: “Tom Helfrich does an awesome job at
Haubstadt. As a race fan, I’d never miss a race at that track because
that’s where you see most of the wheelie photos come from. It’s a lot
of fun to race as a driver, too, but it’s really exciting for a fan. I
think the half-miles are great for the speed, but the quarter-miles and
the smaller 3/8-mile tracks are where sprint cars belong.”

Daryn Pittman, driver of the No. 21 Titan Garages & Carports Maxim
• On racing at quarter miles: “For me it’s great because we can’t find
our own rear end right now on a half-mile. We’ve just been struggling
for the past year-and-a-half on big half-miles. We seem to go a lot
better on a quarter, and then at Pevely we were awesome there.
Haubstadt has been good, I’ve been pretty good at Lawrenceburg. I’m
looking forward to the next couple of weeks, for sure. I’d like to
figure out why we’re not so good on the half-miles, but for the time
being we’ll see if we can take advantage of these quarter-miles.
• On turning around 2005 season at Lawrenceburg: “Lawrenceburg really
turned our season around. We were struggling going into that, qualified
bad and came from the back and got up to fourth. We never looked back
for the rest of the year. We’re looking forward to going back now.
Hopefully we can start up front and have a good chance to win. I enjoy
all the real small short tracks. It’s puts a lot of the driver back
into it and takes a little bit away from the car and motor. They’re
really a lot of fun to run on.”

Joey Saldana, driver of the No. 9 Central Merchant Services Inc. JEI
powered by Mopar
• On racing at Indiana quarter miles: “It’s an hour or two hours from
my house so that’s the nice part of running the Outlaws and being able
to race and be home in your own bed at night. Usually you don’t get to
do that. I grew up racing on the quarter-miles and look forward to
them.”

Donny Schatz, driver of the No. 15 ParkerStore J&J
• On racing at quarter miles: “The first time you run into the corner
it’s a little harder to slow down. Diversity is what makes the drivers
better. It makes the World of Outlaws what it is. You go to a big
track, little track, big track, little track, it makes a guy a little
more diverse. It teaches you a little more common sense and patience.
It’s what makes it fun. If we raced on half-miles all the time
everybody would be bored. I’m just glad to go back to a little place
like Haubstadt where we’ve been decent in the past and maybe we can get
a victory.”

Brooke Tatnell, driver of the No. 8 Garlic Jim’s Pizza/Castrol Eagle
• On racing at quarter miles: “It doesn’t take any less horsepower, but
for me it’s like jumping on a plane and flying back to Australia. It’s
just another day of life on the road. You don’t have to have as much
finesse on a short track, you just have to be more aggressive and
wrestle it a little bit more. On the big half-miles you can’t afford to
twitch the wheel because then you’re washing off horsepower. I’m
looking forward to it. The bullring stuff where you have to get in and
muscle it, I love that.”
