Williams Grove Speedway owner ‘a true visionary’ in motor sports
CONCORD , NC — April 14, 2008 — The World Racing Group and its staff are saddened by the passing on Saturday of Morgan Hughes, a leader in dirt track racing who turned Williams Grove Speedway into one of the top dirt track’s in the country.
Hughes, 88, spearheaded several projects that benefited weekly racing at his Mechanicsburg, Pa. , track as well as Sprint Car racing in general.
The competition at Williams Grove Speedway between the local Pennsylvania Posse and the traveling Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series is legendary, with Hughes credited for creating the environment that provides a rivalry unlike any other in dirt track racing. The culmination of his efforts was evident last fall by the massive crowds during the National Open, an event Hughes turned into one of the top five Sprint Car events in the world.
“Motor sports lost a true visionary in Morgan Hughes,” said World Racing Group President Tom Deery. “For more than 30 years, he strived to make Williams Grove the best dirt track in the country, and he succeeded in leaving behind a legacy of accomplishment that lives on at perhaps the most competitive speedway in the country. He will be missed by all of us.”
