Would Qualifying Late Models be too Much to Ask of Godfrey Speedway?

I was at Gofrey last night and yes there were a lot of damage prior to getting the first lap in of Heat 1 , everyone knows that starting position can play a major role in where you finish in a race especially on smaller tracks where a skilled blocker can hold up half the field, and there obviously was a slower car in the front of this heat, but it appeared to me that both the high and low lines were working well last night. A Little Patience..
I contribute most of it to the competetive field in this first heat, you have Collins running second in UMP points, first in Godfrey track points, Melvin who is first in UMP points and Faust, Zobrist, "all of the drivers" who were there last night are just as anxious to get to the front and knows that if they make the tinniest mistake or get caught off guard it could cost them a race or positions. They were all just hungry.

Wait until next week at Godfrey, " if " they invert the second Feature of the Double 25s how much damage will be done, but it is no different than breaking during a heat and having to come from the rear to make the show in a consi. That is racing, costly or not they know the risks.

I frequent both Godfrey and Mt.Vernon and think they both have good shows.
I like the fact that there is a diversity between these 2 tracks and that each track is different in there racing programs. Thats what keeps it interesting.

Theres my 2 cents, not looking for change.

Qualifying is the absolute worst thing for the fans to have to endure on a weekly show. On an enjoyability scale, it falls somewhere between watching paint drying and grass growing. And then, you've got all of the fast guys in front, which mnimizes passing possibilities. If you consistently bore the fans, they will find another way to spend their money than at a racetrack. When the fans quit coming, there's no money to pay the racer, and then their fancy cars sit in the garage. "I got the fastest car in the world. If there was somewhere for me to race it at, I'd show ya!" Not good for the sponsors either, if no one can see their names on the cars.

So in summary, " Would Qualifying Late Models be too Much to Ask of Godfrey Speedway?" In my opinion, yes.

My opinion is this..if you qualify..and Melvin has a problem..and has to start in the back anyway...someone will come on here and say.."hey..he should have been put up front...he is shootng for national points." I kinda think..thats why people have that opinion sometimes..and im sorry..he had to start in the back. As far as the 1st heat deal..well...seemed alot of impatient driver's and yea..a guy on the front row..not as fast..or..so called skilled..as was said. So?? Is that driver supposed to request to be put in the back..every week?? I dont think so..he is there to race..like all the others..pass him..dont run over him. I seen Melvin..and..its not bashing him..i like the guy..but..in the feature...lap traffic got crazy..and..he used his nose to punt people out of the way( go ask Dick Taylor). He got under him..carried him all the way down the front straightaway..dont beleive this...look at his car's nose..and Dick's rear bars. Its racing..always will be..and..if people dont like...pill draws..dont go. Plain and simple..easy answer. But..if your afraid of pill draws..it kind of means..your afraid to race...for positions also, in a way. Remmeber..these cars are extremely fast..and..extremely crazy to drive. Things happen..and always will..pill draw..or no pill draw. Its called...racing.

hey sean2 when mtv had steel blocks as a class all by them selves
they wasnt ump they just ran by ump rules.

Yes, I am well aware of how the show has been run at MTV.

You said it...they ran by UMP rules!!! So what does that tell you?

Qualifying is BORING, and makes the features less interesting. I felt sorry for the #51 car last night, starting front row with zobrist, faust, melvin and collins behind him. It does happen though and Im glad that Taylor didnt have to go to the back after the 2nd attempted to start the race. I dont think that qualifying is going to solve the damage problems though. In most features you are going to have to deal with lapped traffic, so you are still going to have to get around the slower cars.
After the first restart everyone should have known this guy wasnt the best driver and THEY should have slowed down on the start until they got AROUND him. Just like when your on the highway, you dont have to worry as much about your own driving but beware of the other drivers.
jmo.......I dont think qualifying is going to stop cars from getting torn up!!!

It dont matter to me either way, qualifying or not. I enjoy watching qualifying & I enjoy watching cars come from the back. To each his own! You cant please everyone.

You are correct Sean2.
If Godfrey started qualifying I would still be there. But like I said before, even when you qualify, racing is racing, and you arent always going to finish the race with no sheet metal damage. Rodney finished second, I dont think he is too upset with the way things went last night.

I don't understand some people. Just because Melvin had his car beat on, Godfrey should qualify? I have seen alot of races were cars get beat on, but you don't see them on here complaining. That is part of racing. I hate it when they qualify because, how fun is it for us in the stands? If that is a reason to qualify, then you would have to qualify every class because there is atleast one car in each class that don't need to be there.

All in all, the races last night were really good!!! Good Job Godfrey!!!

Rodney ran all but 2 of the Summer National races that I can recall, and never did his car look like it did last night. The S/N guys have respect for each others equiptment and they race inches apart 4 wide at some of the tracks and never touch each other. Almost all the dash qualifiers put on a great show (passing) lapped traffic. That is racing.

I personally talk to Collins after the race and he also made comments on how Taylor was NOT paying attention to the BLUE flag, that is why he got punted down the front straightway. It would not be bad to pill draw with a bunch of drivers that know how to race but with the bunch last night you might as well have stayed in Mt. Vernon and went to the Fair Demo Derby.

TURBO-They do weight at Mt Vernon, and no one pits in front of the scales. You are getting incorrect information. Pay for a pit pass and sit on the back side you will see things differant.

PS I recall the S/N race at Godfrey when Babb was using his nose to move drivers out of the way. Everyone liked it that night. Whats up with that?

if you want to keep the car in perfect shape dont race. well then you would have nothing to cry about week in and week out....................................

i have no problem with the pill draw as long as a driver knows when he can win and when hes gonna lose no matter what he does. rodney knows his roots i beleive all these guys do, but not only starting sub-par cars at the front tear up EXPENSIVE equipment, its dangerous. and i know people say its exciting to watch cars come from the back. but how exciting would it be if some guys got hurt in a accident that couldhave been avoided? car racing is dangerous and accidents will happen, and equipment will get tore up, but i think the sport should take every effort to improve and make the sport better such as nascar does.so do i think qulifing should be mandatory YES but i do also accept thats its not.and for all that care RODNEY GOT HIS START IN RACING BY TURNING MY GRANDMOTHERS 1971 CHEVY IMPALA INTO A BOMBER. HES CAME A LONG WAY AND IS A VERY WELL RESPECTED DRIVER AMONG DRIVERS SO IF THESE GUYS DO HAVE A COMPLAINT ITS USUALLY NOT UNWARRANTED.

The #51 was a new guy, well I dont recall seeing him before, and I would think if you are new to the track and you are sitting in a heat with Collins, Faust, Melvin, and them you would NOT want to sit on front row. This is an instance where I think the #51 should have chose to start in the back. I dont believe other drivers should opt to run in the back, but if you are new to the track start in the back until you get a feel of the track and the other drivers. I have seen this done many times before.

If indeed the blue flag was shown to Taylor, he should have had the courtesy to get out of the way. If not, then he got what he deserved! As far as Rodney running with S/N and his car not getting beat up, well thats because the majority of those drivers have a professional attitude and common sense, they arent out there to tear up cars. i personally think if you are new to a track, or a new driver, it doesnt hurt to start in the back until you get a feel for things. I have even seen bomber drivers start in the back for that reason, its called courtesy, not just for others but yourself. Personally it doesnt matter to me whether they qualify or pill draw, its racin and I love it! anyway JMO

I can't see where a driver being slow should be a problem. Whether he starts in the front or back eventually the faster cars will have to pass them. If he's up front at the start they'll have to pass him for position. If he's in back they'll have to pass him as a lapped car. Either way, he'll be on the track. So just drive and shut up! That's what I'd say. I'd think that if I knew there was a driver that wasn't that skilled that I'd be a little more careful with my car around them. Maybe take a different line to avoid possible contact with them. Not to mention that if they aren't experienced that you know they're gonna get nervous when the likes of Melvin is pushing on the rear bars. Pill draw or qualifying, it all comes down to racing. That includes passing cars!

Qwaynick..point exactly..but.you cant please them all. Melvin is a great driver..no..i never will bash his efforts..but..Dick..did obide by the blue and yellow...he ran in the middle groove..and stayed there under total control. Punting people out of the way..well..that's fine..if you do it..more power to you..but dont get mad when someone points it out. Yea..i didnt see Babb do that..i dont really care..lol..its not about that. Its about..racing..passing..and for god sakes..dont drive over someone. Years ago..my 1st year..at pill draw..i elected to goto the back..promoter at that time said..uhh..excuse me..we pill draw. I said..yea..but..im new...exact quote "Well...2 choices...take your pill draw and race..or..load her up and go home". Well...maybe..this guy..has been given the run around before..maybe..after hot laps..he felt comfortable with his car. Who knows? Hey..i watched the race..yea..he got out of shape..and bad..but..does that give everyone the right..to run him over..and each other?? Still..answer is nope..sorry. Just..please..everyone..calm down..cars will get fixed..races will move on...chit happens..and as the world of racin turns. Good luck to everyone next week.

smartest thing I have heard in this thread.....

:D by the way how did the 99 do??? he is up and comming ????

I think that with as many cars as they get on a weekly basis, there isnt really a need to qualify..whether you start in the front or the back..passing is part of racing.
