ORBISONIA, PA-As the laps were winding to a close in Saturday evening's first ever Super 600 Showdown, held at the Hill Valley Speedway, Donnie Hendershot of Clear Sprint MD was racing to an apparent runner-up finish. Drew Heistand was the race leader since the initial green flag. Hendershot tried to attempt passing bids on restarts, and pulled closer in lapped traffic, but Heistand remained in front.

Suddenly, with 42 of the event's 50 circuits on the scoreboard, Heistand's No. 6 went up in smoke, eight laps shy of the $10,000 top winning prize. Hendershot, who likewise was enjoying a successful event, took command of the lead on the restart and he never looked back to record the largest 600cc Micro Sprint payout of his racing career.

It was no doubt the largest race in the country for 600 micros. The site-Tom Martin's Hill Valley Speedway. The event was organized by Dale Thomas, owner of Microracing.com and a 600 race car driver himself. The show turned in much success as 112 cars crammed the pit area just to get a shot at becoming the top 600cc micro sprint name in the country. Hendershot climbed the mountain.

Out of the original 112 cars, 26 earned their right to align for the main event battle. After a spirited four-abreast pace lap, the field was ready for war at the drop of a green flag. Hendershot and Drew Heistand shared row one. The initial green was negated due to a caution, and Hendershot had actually taken the lead going down the backstretch. A complete restart was held and Heistand learned from the opening green. He was able to take off on the ensuing restarts.

A couple of early red flags were needed. First for a multi-car tangle on the opening lap, which eliminated mulit-Linda's (PA) Speedway track champion Brett Schoenly. Another occured on the tenth circuit. Second generation talent, Jake Murphy, rolled his car over, and fire developed in the machine. Murphy was able to escape uninjured.

When green racing continued, Heistand remained in front with Hendershot in tow. Royersford's Steve Buckwalter, who has won plenty of Micro Sprint races during the course of his career, was in partaking in the festivities, as he sat behind the wheel of the Hauck-5R. Buckwalter raced third. Neil Shepherd made the long tow from Warsaw IN and he raced from the fourth position. Brother to the race leader, Dusty Heistand followed suit in fifth.

Good caution-free racing took place from laps 11 through 25. It was at this moment when Buckwalter's machine spun to bring out a caution, which adbanced Shepherd into the front three behind Heistand and Hendershot. Drew Heistand continued to show the way over Hendershot, Shepherd, Dusty Heistand, and Mike Dicely, behind the wheel of the Hyper Chassis-44. A caution with 35 laps on the counter took place, and a fuel stop was then the order of business.

On the restart, Hendershot looked to the inside of Heistand in turns one and two, but Heistand held him off and pulled away. Unfortunately, Heistand's dreams of collecteing the $10,000 literally went up in smoke when Wrightsville PA racer's machine sputtered to a halt after 42 laps had been completed. It was a tough break for the accomplished Micro Sprint racer who has tasted '05 feature victories at both Shippensburg (PA) Speedway and Linda's Speedway.

Hendershot became the new race leader and he never looked back during the course of the event's final eight laps. Hendershot, a feature winner this year at the Path Valley (PA) Speedway and a former track champion at that facility, powered his PMP Chassis-31x to the winner's circle.

Shephard enjoyed a fine payday of $3000 for his runner-up finish. Dusty Heistand of Elizabethtown PA managed a third place finish worth $2000. Ninth place starter Randy West, a prolific Micro Sprint winner over the year, returned to his roots behind the wheel of an RTS Chassis No. 55. He secured fourth for $1000 after a good battle with Dicely on lap 45. Dicely, another racing veteran and chassis builder out of Lewisberry PA, rounded out the front finishing five.

Sammy Casella, a regular at the Bridgeport (NJ) Speedway, strolled from 21st to sixth. Ryan Criswell, who is a regular in the MARA Mini Sprint division in the state of Illinois, raced from twelfth to seventh. Kevin Bayer of Broken Arrow OK finished eighth. Mike Rutherford of Newmanstown PA finished ninth and Scott Sawyer, another competitor from the state of Oklahoma rounded out the finishing field.
