Rich Vleck, TULSA, Okla. (May 4, 2009)- Just as the sun begins each day, the 2009 season for the Lucas Oil ASCS Patriots will rise from the east Friday at Albany-Saratoga Speedway.
For the first time ever, the Lucas Oil ASCS Patriot Region travels to the Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, NY. When the first green flag drops, it will become the farthest east an ASCS sanctioned event has ever been held. It is an event many have looked forward to for a long time.
Located in New York’s Capital Region, this beautiful 4/10-mile facility is Eastern New York’s leader when it comes to Friday Night excitement. Starting in 2009, they will also feature new Saturday Night divisions, including two winged classes. The Patriots will serve as the Grand Marshall to this new endeavor.
Most teams have yet to even hit a racetrack so far this year. Not only will they have to knock off the rust, for many, they will have to figure out a track they are unfamiliar too.
Two-time and defending Patriot Champion Bryan Howland, of Auburn, NY, has only one career start in his No. 51 Maxim at Albany-Saratoga, where he placed ninth. In his mini sprint days though, Howland swept a pair of features in 2003.
While Howland is limited in his experience, none of the other drivers from the Top-10 of 2008 final point standings has ever qualified for an A-Main there. Only Kyle Moffit has ever run a full-sized sprint of that group. Blake and Bobby Breen, Bubba Broderick and Jared Fink do have a number of Central New York Mini Sprint starts at “The Great Race Place.”
For Broderick and Fink, this race has been circled since the day it was announced. Albany is the closest track to their home and will let them ease in to the 2009 tour.
With the Patriot regulars heading into uncharted waters, a number of invaders may be ready to score the first $1,750 paycheck of the season.
Doug Emery, of Nedrow, NY, is a former winner in Malta back in 1996, along with Alain Bergeron, from St. Pie, QC, who was victorious in 2005.
Among the other drivers make the short trip into Malta are Jeff VanDusen, from Otego, NY, Jessica Zemken, from Sparkers, NY, Warren Alexson, from Altamont, NY and Cory Sparks, who now lives in Edinburg, NY, but is a multi-time go-kart track champion located at Albany-Saratoga.
This first race under Lucas Oil sponsorship will also bring with it a new passing points system, all-new merchandise, as well as the Hot Wings TV Cameras as they shoot their first show of the season to air on Time Warner Cable Sportsnet at the end of the month.
