17th Annual Magnolia State 100 Event Preview

Columbus, MS-This Friday and Saturday night, September 29th and 30th, Columbus Speedway in Columbus, MS hosts the 17th running of the Premier Ford Magnolia State 100. The top Super Late Model drivers in the region as well as many of the best in the nation will once again fill the pits at "The Baddest Bullring in the South" to do wage an all-out war for a record purse including a $25,006 winner's share in the 100-lap affair.

The premier racing event in Mississippi always draws a huge field of Super Late Models and indications are no different this year with nearly 90 Super Late Model drivers already entered for the show with many more entries expected at race time. The race has quickly evolved into one of the top short track racing events in the South under the steady guidance of event promoter Dewitt Singleton.

Drivers who call Mississippi home obviously covet the prize above all others, though "The Kosciusko Kamikaze" Anthony Rushing is the only driver from the Magnolia State to enter victory lane in the 16 years of the event's history. Other area heroes expected to try to keep the money in-state include David Breazeale, plus Scott Dedwylder, Jason Smith, and local heroes Eddie and Rick Rickman, Shawn Edwards, Tombo Callahan, and Mark Stokes. Other drivers from the region include the reigning Magnolia State 100 champion of Louisiana's Chris Wall will attempt to keep the money in the southeast, along with Alabama veteran driver Mike Boland who has competed in all 16 previous events with 2 runner up finishes, plus other Columbus Speedway front runners Ronny Lee Hollingsworth, Dean Carpenter, Jay Blair, Jimbo McDuffie, Bub McCool, Scott Slay, and Neil Baggett. A small sampling of the unique mix of top regional drivers entered include Kenny Merchant, Aaron Hatton, Ronny Adams, Jeff and Peyton Taylor, Mark Mears, Jamie Elam, Kelly Hanvey, Aaron Ridley, Tony Morris, Garrett Durrett, Dane Dacus, Jay Brinkley, Rob Litton, plus a host of drivers entered representing 11 different states.

The names that adorn the Magnolia State 100 prestigious champion’s list illustrates that adding a Magnolia State 100 win to a driver's resume is no easy task. Along with last year's winner “The Intimagator” Chris Wall, drivers to take home victories in the Mississippi’s biggest short track event are Mike Marlar, Anthony Rushing, Wendell Wallace, Ronnie Johnson, Terry English, Rex Richey, Johnny Virden, and of course, the events' 7-time champion Billy Moyer.

As usual, a host of the nation's top competitors have indicated that they plan to attempt to add their name to the winner’s list this weekend. Needless to say, a stellar field of many of the nation’s premier drivers will be in attendance. Drivers such as Freddy Smith, Earl Pearson Jr, Wendell Wallace, Don O’Neal, Clint Smith, Jimmy Owens, Shane Clanton, Ray Cook, plus other nationally known professional racers have indicated they will be competing for the $25,006 top prize.

The highly entertaining format of the successful is in place for the fans. Drivers will compete in Pepsi Pole Qualifying on Friday night that is always a spectacle at "The Bullring" as it is man versus machine in a battle to see which driver can tame Johnny Stokes' high banks with a $300 Fast Time Award courtesy of Muffler Magic. Qualifying determines the lineup, with an added twist of an inversion of 4 for six heat races, which never fail to produce some of the weekend's most intense action; as drivers will race on the ragged edge trying to become one of the top 18 feature starters. Heat winners will then draw among themselves to determine the top 6 starting positions in the A-Main.

Saturday night’s line up features nearly 150 laps of Super Late Model racing action. The event employs a very unique format as those competitors who did not make the $25,006-to-win, main event through heat races on Friday night get not one, but two chances to get make the 26-car starting field. Drivers unable to transfer through one of the three frantic B-mains will have a final opportunity to make the big show in the Last Chance Dash presented by American Race Tires. And then, finally, the big one - the $25,006-to-win, 100-lap battle royal at "The Bullring" - the 17th running of the Magnolia State 100, which will roll off as the first main event of the evening.

The Magnolia State Championships showcase talent outside of the Super Late Model division. A spectacular field of Open-Wheel (IMCA-type) Modifieds can be expected as the division races for $2,006-to-win in the Etheridge Race Parts Magnolia State Modified Championship. The super-competitive modifieds have been responsible for some of the best racing of the season in 2006 at "The Bullring". The hard-racing Street Stocks will compete for $1,000 to win Gator Trax Boats Magnolia State Street Stock Championship and Late Model Stock/Crate Models will compete for a $1,200 prize for the Mills Morris Carquest Magnolia State Late Model Stock/Crate Model Championship.

Open practice begins Thursday night, September 28th at 7:00 PM for all divisions. Friday night is Pepsi Pole Night, as the Magnolia State 100 Super Late Models qualify and run heat races as they attempt to make the feature field. Local divisions will run on Friday night in preliminary action as well.
