I am in cardiac rehab, trying to get in shape for a motorcycle
trip to Sturgis So. Dakota in august....I am also getting my
pit bike in shape so I can run around the pits and aggravate
everyone this season...Lookin' forward to seeing everyone....
Probably less than a month before test & tune/playdays start..

to be honest

people are discouraged with the rule package. there will be just a few who will dominate. we have maybe 6 new drivers, after a few weeks some will quit or get fed up. this is a class that went from beginner to advance in 2 short years. yea i'm looking forward to racing again but i was hoping we could compete at a top level. we could with the old rules, now with the new rules i doubt it. if i want to spend the money to be highly competitive we'll move up. i see this class like a far east country, 2 classes, the rich and the poor. i hope i'm wrong. jmo kurt

Tough Days To Come.

Hello All::)

As the weather gets better and better we all are looking forward to the coming season, but some are still up set with the rules changes at MCS.
As Kurt has laid out, it may come down to the age old adage,
"he who has the most money wins"
This season in mini stock at MCS it will come down to who spends his or her money in the best way to be the fastest. This has been true in all of motor sports since the beginning of time. If you are running a FORD and you begin to run well or better than the others, you will get penalized by MEL and get lead installed all over your car.
I am not sure of the thought proses behind this, but let me see if anyone else can follow my train of thought.

Lets look at who competes in our class.

I want to go racing, but I have no experience.
Do I start out in a Late Model? NO.
Why do you think kids start out in Karts.
They are less to build and maintain and it takes less experience to learn to drive them.
Where do you go to get some real seat time in a car after that.
Not to Street Stock, Pure Street or B Mod.
MINI STOCK is the perfect starter for all who want to compete in a real race car regardless of age or gender. Weather they aspire to continue their career in motor sports, or just have a night out with the guys (or girls).
I think the folks who started this class should receive a pat on the back.
It was done with all the right rules and for all the right reasons.
It may not have started out that way,but when we got into it it was great.
Opening up the engine rules was a big mistake.

The rest of the rules at MCS don't effect any thing as much as those rules do.
Now who will spend all their budget on the power plant and not on safety?
These cars were fast enough last year.
And that goes for the Chevys too.
I fear we have seen the un-doing of this class on dirt.
You will still see the FORDS in Pony Stock out on road courses and asphalt ovals where Chevy has nothing to compete with and the development of the cars and engines will still continue.
It still seems sad to me that we are headed this way.

That is just the way I see it. Right or wrong!
We will see all of you good folks this year.
Although I am not saying what we have done to our three cars,
I don't think any one has any thing to worry about from us.

See you all soon:

The rule change is there so there would be faster cars better compitition and so the ones that did not want to cheat could be equal to the ones that were all ready. The weight thing is for ford and CHEVY and i figure its a deterrent so you dont go overboard. This is still a cheap class my b-mod motor will cost me as much as i have in my whole truck so how is this class not cheap.

Cheep?

Hey Jim:

Good to see you are still with us.
Havent heard from you in awhile.

To answer your question "How is this not cheep?"
I think it was you and your brother who said no racing is cheep.
I used to say that about our class, but after a season of running 3 cars,
you boys are right.
NO RACING IS CHEEP!

MORE OF MY THOUGHTS ON THIS LATER!

I agree that there will be faster cars. As far as better competition I think the opposite will happen. The weight rule will create better competition between the front runners but overall the field will be more spread out than ever.

I totally disagree with your last statement. That is like saying lets legalize robbery so the honest law abiding people can get free stuff too. I think the answer to that is actually teching the cars and not allowing the illegal cars to run. JMO

Looking forward to racing with everybody again this year. I think our class is still a great group and I get along with everyone overall. There have been times I have gotten irritated with someone but I never held a grudge or disliked anyone for more than a week. Or two weeks maybe, well one time a month.

( Cheaper ) Thats right Ed your problem is the 3 CARS , gets a little more expensive !!

Well, It is now later:

Here are some thoughts on the overall "state of the class"
(If you will).

They have not seen fit to change the class much from last years rules away down south at the other tracks, so one begs the question why change them here?
For this I have no reasonable answer except personnel preference.
If I were the King I would make the rules as I see fit and those who question them , WELL, OFF WITH THEIR HEAD! As the queen of hearts once said. If you wish to compete at a certain track you must conform to the rules and except them for what they are.
Change is for sure:
Now make the best of it.
What I have learned about our sport is that things have a way of taking care of them selves.
If no one likes you, you will not be around for long and if you are, you had better watch your back side.
All sides for that matter.

As I see it.
This will take care of it's self.

I must admit I like some of the changes and some of them directly effect me (US).
First let me say that this class has probably seen it's hay day.
It is no longer an entry level class that you can compete in for a few bucks on a Saturday night. (They call that class HORNETS.)
The pay out will not cover the bent up and blown up cars and trucks it will consume, but I am not sure it ever did.
The class needs a leader much like back when it was founded.
Those guys got it right in my opinion.
It was perfect. Well maybe just a little tweaking in some spots.
I thought the stock rod rule was silly.
You want to see car count every race night, then give the competitors the bottom end to be there time after time.
I have more in my stock Ford rods then it would have cost me to buy the good ones.
You should be able to build a bullet proof bottom end and not have to prove otherwise.
If you want to even the field, do it with the induction system.
They do it in Karts and in NASCAR.
If the Fords run away with the show, slap them with a restricter plate.
That is so much easier than the way they have done it.
I can water jet out a plate for about $2.00 bucks.
That is a far cry from a $1000.00 ported head and I can take it off in 5 minuets to run at another track...
WHAT WERE WE THINKING!

I don't know about all of the others, but hanging lead on my car will put me back into the dark ages on set up.

NEXT:

I like the MSD rule change and I think the other tracks should think about it as well.
It will help the competitors without allot of engine tuning experience run well without popping and banging around the track.
It will allow a richer mixture which will in turn help keep the oil and water temps down. It will also help keep the pistons from melting and the rod bearings for getting beat out from detonation.
As you can see many benefits from the MSD in my opinion.
The only horsepower gain is it will help you reach the full potential of your already legal engine combination.
The tire rule has put a real financial crunch on our team, but I understand it and I am addressing it as of this writing. We were looking into the tires last year, but we ran out of budget to do it.
In closing:
I would just like to say to the promoters leave the rules alone for awhile so we can all catch up.
Maybe then we can all have a chance to be the front runners.
For the life of me I can't see why a sanctioning body won't pick up this class.
Are they smarter then us or are we missing the boat?

THIS HAS BEEN THE STATE OF THE CLASS AS I SEE IT ADDRESS. lol:D

Thanks for reading it..

Uncle Ed.

If anyone is interested, we are selling all our 13" wheels and tires.
Too many to list.
All are 13 x 10 and 13 x 12 with 10 and 12 " Hoosier's and American Racer tires 25 x 10 x 13 All are 4 on 4.25 bolt pattern.
We found them to be a hot set up at MCS and St Francis County.
All are in great shape. Some are new!
PM me for details...

Excelent post Ed

Concerning the mini stocks, I loved every minute of the 2 years I raced a mini stock, even though there were a few nights were I was tested for my patients and the attitude of "being for fun". My car was 100% legal, even though there was a few digruntled people saying I was illegal, becouse of the fact I was a front running car week in and week out. Just to throw some numbers out concerning the costs:
1. I had $7000 in my car over a 2 year period, which included a new head to be built becouse of cracking the pld one in the 05 season and barrel rolling it and rebuilding it.
2. The belief that you must turn your motor 9000 rpm to be fast is false, build your motor to be strong, figure out the rpm range and CHANGE the GEARING to mate to the best rpm range of the motor. I never turned my car more then 7400 rpm and that was on a wet slick track, during the dry slick tracks, I turned an average of 6500 to 6800 rpm.
3. Never compromise speed for safety!!!!!
4. SET UP IS KEY!!! Learn how to drive the car, not let the car drive the driver, and dont force the car to try to do something it is not wanting to do. In the 06 season, aside from changing the rear tires out and changing air pressure, I never touched a weight jack, moved weight around or anything. I felt what the car was wanting to do and would change my driving line to compensate for what the car would and wouldnt do. There were several nights where I could run the very bottom in the heat race all the way around the track, but come feature time, I could get the car to handle down on the bottom in one corner but would have to move up a groove in the other.
5. Have fun with it and enjoy it!
6. The cost of racing is going up in all classes, especially to start in a new class, all new parts, chassis, motors, tires, ect.; I am finding this out just like a few others are doing. One reason why I am moving up to a mod, I dont want to be locked into racing 1 track, I plan on racing as many tracks as possible including making a trip to Texas for a week end towards the end of the season (pending on finances). The more seat time + more tracks= more experiance to make a better driver. Also concerning cost, the MSD boxes I have mixed feelings on, for a new MSD box your looking at $200 + for one, granted you may find used ones cheaper but I would rather buy new, less chance of failure and problems later on. Ported and polished heads.....well, some can find better deals then others.
7. The number one thing I am going to miss from the mini stocks, the comradery and companionship. This past years bike giveaway was an awesome night. It made me extremely proud to know that as a group, what we accomplished that night and how many kids' days we made. No matter what, how many races you win or loose, that night made it all worth while.

Oh ya, Ed, have Tony get ahold of me, or I will try to call him about a couple of things.

Thanks Jack:

Thanks for the vote of confidence Jack:
I would have liked to help grow the class as it has been a ball to race with all of you, but I fear it's days are numbered.
Just imagine if we were to let the HORNETS go wild with the engine rules without concern for the actual safety of the competitors.
They have much more exotic engines then we have to build on.
Fuel injection systems and twin cams and with the factory's building more and more horsepower into these engines the physics would over come the cars ability to handle and the speeds they could achieve would become dangerous in my opinion.
Our class is a natural first step on the road to driving much more sophisticated race cars and the knowledge we obtain down here directly applies to all of the upper class cars.
Being rear wheel drive, the handling and feel of the Mini Stock is a close second to Pure Street or Street Stock which is the next logical step up in your driving career if you choose to step up.
Ask the Paxton's how it felt to go from Karts on asphalt to a B-Mod and they will give you an honest answer, that's one h*ll of a step up in the car control arena.
That is what I call baptism by fire!
They did well last year for the first year and I am glad to see them have some success.
I think they will do even better this year.
I just don't understand the need to run folks away from this class because of a few competitors need for speed.
I would have been the first one to say lets go as fast as we can until I began to understand the nature of the beginners class.
The Mini Stock class is not about speed, it is a training ground for young drivers and seasoned drivers who want to go have some fun without breaking the bank and without the seasoned drivers the new drivers would have no one to follow and learn from. So you see we need all types of competitors in this class from all levels of competition, but we need a watchful eye on the real purpose of the class.
I know the track needs to put on a show for the fans and we are just a small part of the total show, but I heard Carl Edwards say that he was helping his brother build a Hornet to run and why, he has enough funds to buy the younger brother a Late Model with the truck, trailer and a years worth of spear parts and not even think about it twice.
Why start him out in such an inferior class?
He needed to start out slow and gain some seat time.
Learn how to make adjustments and learn to manage tires and on and on.
We are only one year into this and we are being asked to change our tire combination to run at MCS and I am wondering how to keep from starting over in the set up game.
After learning how to keep the cars from spinning around every lap to being some what competitive at the end of 06 (thanks to Mark and J.D. Rottler for getting us back on track) I am worried about starting over and with having to increase the horsepower to run up front.
It makes a whole new learning curve for me not to mention $2500.00 worth of new tires and wheels.
Slap on 3 ported heads and we have spent the budget for the first 1/3 of the season and have not been out to the track!
I hope others have it nailed so we can stay off of each other because if we have to fix anything else we will be sitting at home on Saturday night...BROKE and BROKEN!

I hate to rant on and on, but no one else is even posting anything and I figured you all need some one to stir up the pot.

I CAN DO THAT!

Speaking of stirring up the pot, how is the MOD coming Butch?
We have not heard much from you over the winter.
Your thoughts are always inspiring to me.
Tell us what you think...
And where are you BAD BOB?
Join in the fun and lets get this going again....
Milsey:
The track pics are not enough, we want more pics.
The new building is looking great.
Looking forward to running some down there..

COME ON IT'S RACE TIME AGAIN!:D

Uncle Ed.

Class economy

I think this class has not seen its hay day ( hopefully anyway). I'm a rookie coming into this class. As far as the price of this class I personally think it is the cheapest race car I have had to date. I have built a new car for this class and I have about $1400.00 in it minus 5 items. The engine, steering wheel, and gauges, shocks, and springs. I figure I have about another $1,400.00 to go. that's not a lot of money for a full blown race car. I bought 10 used chrome wheels for $200.00, and 21 used sportsman tires for $100.00 alot of them have 80% rubber on them. I have enough tires to last the season. Oh I did save some money I had an MSD box in the garage already. I bought a used seat and cover for $60, built the cage myself, bought a used set of nice pedals and master cylinders, floater rear end including gear and a fuel cell for $ 700.00. These cars can be built with little money and be very competitive. You just have to be willing to do a little research. I'm not going to make opening night but I will make it out as soon as possible I look forward to racing and meeting everyone, You sound like a great group of people. Where else could you build a race car for about $3000.00 and have a great time See you at MCS

"I know the track needs to put on a show for the fans and we are just a small part of the total show"....This statement was copied & pasted from
Uncle Eds post & I have never disagreed with him until this statement..
Ed, if you'll re-read Butch's item #7 listed below, you'll have to admit
that the Mini-stock class was much more than "a small part" of the
total show....The mini-stocks did more than any other class to put
Butts in the stands but Apparently Mel failed to see this & chose to
destroy the class with his rule changing power trip...If I'm not mistaken,
the only time the beer stand ran out of beer was the night 17 plus Bikers
from the Misfits MC showed up to watch the Mini-stocks race...People are still talking about the bike give-away, And the Misfits had expressed an interest that night in participating in a give away this season but I'm afraid that ship has sailed...

7. "The number one thing I am going to miss from the mini stocks, the comradery and companionship. This past years bike giveaway was an awesome night. It made me extremely proud to know that as a group, what we accomplished that night and how many kids' days we made. No matter what, how many races you win or loose, that night made it all worth while".

In my opinion, both Butch Hartman and Rob Denny played a very important
part of this event, Both of them ex-mini-stock racers who in all likelyhood won't be back...

I totally disagree with your last statement. That is like saying lets legalize robbery so the honest law abiding people can get free stuff too. I think the answer to that is actually teching the cars and not allowing the illegal cars to run.

1.)Jack this is a good statement! See the thing everyone fails to realize is that Mel don't give a Sh!z. Let me reflect for you one moment. For the ones that were at the rules meeting you may remeber this comment "THERE WILL NOT BE A TEAR DOWN AT MY TRACK!" So this pretty much sums it up.

2.)I think we showed last year that we are a class act and the class had alot to offer. The question everyone wants to ask is - we would just like to know why it had to get messed with. Was it really because we need to put chevy in the winner circle in one more class or was it because his buddy spent a fotune on illegal parts! I say we just call it like we see it! I was personally told these rules would happen at the end of the year and I'll be damned if they didn't happen.:D So to him and his brother congrats to you. It's just a shame that your plans are not to run in this class the whole season.....maybe you can mess with the B-mod rules next! :D

So now let's all move on and make the best of this new and up coming year. Can't wait to see everyone and meet the new guy's and girl's.;)

Oh! Incase you didn't see the end of uncle Ed's post we had to spend most of our racing budget on new wheel's and tires to meet our new tire rule! So we have a lot of nice 13" wheels and tires for sale give us a call or pm us.

Thanks for your time.

Now That We Have It All Out In The Open....

Wheew:

I am glad he got this off his chest before we go racing.....
(Just kidding Tony)

Bad Bob.
You have disappointed me by not detecting my sarcasm  in the statement you quoted me on.
In a post at the end of the season of 06 I said the we were just as important as the other classes and that we put on a better show than Create Late Model Class.
(I caught allot of He!! over that statement and I deserved it)
Far be it for me to tell the other classes how they look or what kind of show they put on. I have enough to do at the track and I don't usually get to see the other classes.

SO:

We are still in total agreement.:) Perfect Harmony.:D

As a matter of fact I was going to ask you if you still needed a driver for that screaming yellow thing.
I was going to volunteer.
After I get us to the track, unload the cars check everything and get the grill going I could find some time to make a few laps in her.

YOU KNOW JUST TO GET THE CAR COUNT UP! :D :D :D

Can't wait until we all meat again in our favorite place....

See you all soon:

Uncle Ed.

We are really looking forward to having you guys down at Fredericktown this year. I'm especailly looking forward to meeting the guys who were RAMS members the past couple of years that I really never got a chance to meet in person.

I have nothing but respect for Mel, but I totally disagree with tossing out all the rules. I can tell you this though, if you come to Fredericktown be ready to get inspected.

If you're coming back to Fredericktown for the first time in a couple of years, be prepared to be SHOCKED.... It's so much better you won't believe it. We would love to have you with us opening night, March 30th. It's going to be a very, very special night.
