Austin Alumbaugh won his first career 360 O’Reilly Winged Outlaw Warriors sprint car feature event on the ¼ mile Springfield Raceway Saturday night. The 21 year old driver won the pole starting spot of the 20 lap feature finale by having a pair of aces in the Isle of Capri Sprint Car Stud poker game that determined the top six starting spots. Alumbaugh took the lead from Curtis Boyer on the second lap and never was challenged for the victory in the race that went green to checkered flag.
Jonathan Cornell would also make a pass on Boyer during the third lap to move into the second position. Boyer held on to third at the checkers followed by Randy Martin and Toby Brown to round out the top five.
The win places Alumbaugh in third place in O’Reilly Winged Outlaw Warrior points and in a tight battle with Jonathan Cornell for 2008 WOW Rookie of the Year honors. The two rookie candidates are separated by 30 points. Cornell is 10 points behind current point leader, Randy Martin.
The O’Reilly Winged Outlaw Warriors will be in action Wednesday, June 11th on the Missouri State Fairgrounds ½ mile in Sedalia and Saturday, June 14th for the rescheduled Gary Scott Memorial at 24 Raceway in Moberly, MO.
