Road Warrior Tour Champion Matt Holcomb Over $65,000 Awarded/

RIPLEY, WV-Presenting awards in excess of $60,000 in prize money and $10,800 in contingencies, The American Motor Racing Association (AMRA) crowned its 2010 champions at its 17th annual banquet at Cedar Lakes Conference Center near Ripley, WV Saturday, November 13. Claiming the MALTA Doors and Windows Modified Division’s National Points Championship was Kenny Johnson, Mineral Wells, WV, while Matt Holcomb, Crooksville, Ohio, was crowned as the Modified Road Warrior Challenge Tour champion. Crowned as the AMRA Late Model Division champion was Chris Garnes, Evans, WV, while Derrick Smith, Thurman, Ohio was named the W.S. Hogg Insurance "Rookie of the Year".
Since 1993 over half a million dollars has been awarded in prizes and point’s contingencies at the annual AMRA banquet. This year’s cash prizes push the AMRA record to over $609,000, putting an exclamation point on one of the selling aspects of what the AMRA is about--helping racers. The real "jewel" of the AMRA is its extravagant point fund and contingencies, an aspect of the organization that compliments a rule's program which levels the playing field for participating racers.
Overall, nearly 70 drivers of the 300-plus in attendance went home with prizes in excess of $250. Another couple dozen drivers in attendance, not in the top grid of the standings went home with contingency certificates of at least $40 or more.
The American Motor Racing Association would like to congratulate AMRA Late Model Champion Chris Garnes, AMRA National Modified Champion Kenny Johnson, and Matt Holcomb, the AMRA Road Warrior Challenge Champion. The W.S. Hogg Insurance AMRA Rookie of the Year was Derrick Smith. Johnson received a $5,000 championship check, Garnes $3,000, Matt Holcomb $1,200, and Derrick Smith $400.
The staff at the State of West Virginia-owned Cedar Lakes Resort prepared a fine buffet-style meal of turkey and steak for the black-tie affair. Many sponsors of the series and honorable attendees expressed their appreciation of the racer's appearance at the first-class affair.
Bruce Hines and Scott Wolfe served as Master of Ceremonies for the formal awards fete and banquet. Dave Poske, of Poske's Performance Parts in Parkersburg, WV, a longtime supporter of the AMRA recognized contributing sponsors and track owners for their support in making the AMRA a huge success.
"Welcome to all in attendance this evening," Poske began. "We have on tap tonight an evening of fun and fellowship and a time to talk about some of the competitive racing each of you participated in last season."
Mr. Poske noted, "I know this part of the program will take some time, but it is time well spent for these fine sponsors who invest in the AMRA. Their support is vital to the success of the organization."
"In this economy, it is worthy to mention that the AMRA is celebrating its 17th year with this annual awards banquet. Not many racing organizations can claim such a track record. At this time I would like to thank the following sponsors."
