MADISON, Ill. - After a successful and well-received event in 2008, the American Speed Association Late Model Series (ASALMS) Challenge Division returns to Gateway International Raceway this season along with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. The 100-mile race will follow the Camping World 200 on Saturday, Sept. 12, providing fans a great racing double-header.

Last year’s event saw Illinois native “Fast” Eddie Hoffman take the checkered flag for the race win and Peter Cozzolino overcome an 18-point deficit and overtake Jacob Goede for the Challenge Division season title. The event provided GIR fans with the feel of short-track racing on the facility’s 1.25-mile oval and this year’s race should be no different.

ASALMS President Ron Varney said he is looking forward to the series’ return to the St. Louis area. “We are really pleased that we have been invited back to Gateway again in 2009,” he said. “I think everyone there from the fans, teams, and officials were extremely happy with the race and the response from the fans. We look forward to many more years of exciting racing at Gateway.”

Lenny Batycki, GIR’s vice president and general manager, said the expectations for a great ASALMS event were high last year and the racers exceeded them. “The ASA put on a great show here in 2008,” he said. “We haven’t heard a negative comment about the on-track action and the entertainment provided by these amazing drivers.

“It’s appropriate that they are racing on the same day as NASCAR because you can bet we will see some of those drivers racing at the highest levels down the road.”
