Bad news--keep us in your thoughts and prayers

Looks like the 2010 racing season is not going to happen for me.:( I sold my car from the past two years (fondly nicknamed the "Turtle") shortly after the season, planning to upgrade for the coming year.

Recent news has changed plans, though. In November, my wife and I found out that the baby we are expecting is going to have Down syndrome. Now, we have learned that the baby is going to have some of the heart defects that sometimes go with Down syndrome.

The prognosis is very good, and thanks to modern medicine the heart defects are very treatable. But they will still require at least one, and possibly two or three, open heart surgeries anywhere from immediately when the baby is born or possibly two months later, at the latest.

With all the uncertainty coming up--having a new baby with the challenges of Down syndrome and, on top of it, one or more heart surgeries--it just seemed like the wise thing to do, to not get a new race car for this season. So looks like I will be sitting out the 2010 season.

I will definitely be at the track a few times this season (it's in my blood now, I can't stay away completely! :)) and I am most certainly planning on being back out on the track in 2011 (uggh, that seems like a long time from now). But I just wanted everyone to know the reason I won't be out there racing this year, and so you can keep baby Dawson in your thoughts and prayers.

I look forward to seeing everyone and catching up with you the first time I make it to the track!

Trey
Sorry to hear about this. You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. I've always said that family comes before anything (that includes racing). You're making the right decision. Hope all goes well and if you need anything you've got my number.

Trey,
I have only known you for a short time ( I was the one that purchased your car). I wanted you and your family to know that you will be in our thoughts and prayers.

We are thinking about you and Darla. Everything is goingto work out fine, And I want you behind the wheel of Sparkys Honda a time or two this year.

Trey I sure hope that everything turns out good for you guys. The heart part sounds scarry and we will pray for the strength and knowledge of the doctors to heal the babies heart. :) Hope all goes well !

Gary I want to drive Sparky's car one night as well :)

Thanks again to everyone for their thoughts and prayers.

A quick update: we saw the perinatal cardiologist last week, who confirmed the initial diagnosis. Basically, he said that although the defect is "moderately serious" (holes between the upper and lower chambers, and the valves between upper and lower chambers are not fully formed), it is very common for babies with Down syndrome (approx. 25%). He said the surgery to repair the defects is "straightforward" and a relatively simple heart surgery :)confused: I guess "simple" is relative--it's still open heart surgery on a baby!)

In short, the prognosis is extremely good, there will just be a few nerve-wracking moments along the way!

we got cars ...

Prayers

Trey,
I do not know and don't need to the racing family everywhere always stick together you and your wife will stay in our prayers, we went through alot in 2009 lost a busines, my mom and my wife is very ill the sacrifice really does not mean anything if you don't have family with you beleive I KNOW. We sold everything at a lost if you look at the dollar invested but it really doen't mean alot anymore. My God bless you and your wife and we shall keep you in our prayers about the babby. One thing Bad about racing when it's in your blood it seems like it never leaves.
God Bless

Yeah they talk like open heart surgery on a baby is a walk in the park which I guess is good at least they know what they are doing ... it really suprised me on how many heart defects babys have and they fix I alway thought it was rare but how they talk it 's not...
