Inside Line Promotions - GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (July 8, 2013) - For the first time since his vicious crash, John Binz had a car capable of winning.
He quickly worked his way into second place during the 20-lap mini sprint feature at Mountain Creek Speedway on Saturday before a mechanical issue sidelined him.
"I'm not saying we would have won, but we had a chance," he said. "We would have had a top-three car for sure."
After finishing fourth in his heat race, Binz started the main event on the inside of the third row. He drove to third place on the opening lap and into the runner-up position within the next two laps before the right front hub bearing blew a quarter of the way through the feature. The right front tire came off the car and Binz was forced to finish 14th.
"We were good running the bottom," he said. "We're getting there."
The impressive run capped a weekend that opened on Friday at Mountain Creek Speedway, where Binz drove from fifth to fourth in his heat race.
"We were decent in the heat race," he said. "I got racing with Joey Starnes and we were sliding each other back and forth."
With challenging track conditions, Binz finished where he started - seventh - in the main event.
"It was right around the tires," he said. "It was real slick across the race track. One guy was blazing the top, but he wasn't going anywhere. It was follow the leader and hope somebody messed up so you could get by them."
Next up, Binz is set to return to Kennedale Speedway Park in Kennedale, Texas, on Friday.
