West Plains, MO (5/29/05) – Scott Bloomquist from Mooresburg, Tennessee held off the late race charge of Wendell Wallace from Batesville, Arkansas to pick up the $39,000 payday in the 13th Annual O’Reilly Show Me 100 at West Plains Motor Speedway in West Plains, Missouri. The win marked Bloomquist’s third straight win in the event and his record-setting, fourth career Show Me 100 victory.

Allen, Kentucky’s Brandon Kinzer set fast time on Friday night for the eighty-eight Super Late Model in attendance and claimed the $1,700 fast time bonus courtesy of GRT Race Cars. The eclectic field included entries from twenty states

Saturday night’s main event would see Don O’Neal and Dan Schlieper pacing the field for the 100 lap affair. As the green flew Schlieper rocketed to the lead with O’Neal, Steve Francis, and Scott Bloomquist in pursuit. Schlieper would build a two car length advantage by the second circuit as O’Neal maintained the second spot. Francis and Bloomquist would begin to duel for the third spot with Bloomquist taking sole possession of the position by lap 3. The next several laps would see the running order remaining the same up front until lap 12 when Bloomquist overtook O’Neal for the second spot. Bloomquist would quickly erase the lead that Schlieper held over the field and heading down the back stretch on lap 16, Bloomquist would duck to the bottom of Schlieper to assume the lead.

By lap 19, the front runners were entering heavy, lapped traffic. The next several laps would find the leaders dicing through lapped traffic with Bloomquist disposing of the back markers at will. With Bloomquist on cruise control at the front of the pack, O’Neal pulled even with second place, Schlieper, on lap 24 as the pair motored down the back stretch. The duo would race side by side for a lap before O’Neal took over control of the runner up position.

The first caution flag of the event would fly on lap 40 as Jeff Taylor slowed in turn two with mechanical difficulties. Taylor would retire pitside for the evening as the field was stacked double file for the restart with Bloomquist alone on the front row with O’Neal and Schlieper side-by-side on the second row. As the green flag was displayed Bloomquist motored away from the field with Schlieper using the high side to race past O’Neal for second. Matt Miller would also make a strong move on the restart to rocket from eighth into the fifth position, and then a few laps later take over the fourth spot from Clint Smith.

At the front of the pack Bloomquist was again approaching lapped traffic when caution flew on lap 52 for Clint Smith, who slowed with a flat tire. Under the caution Smith and Davey Johnson headed to the pits for fresh rubber and both rejoined the tail of the field. At the time of the caution, Bloomquist, Schlieper, O’Neal, Miller, and Skip Arp made up the top five positions. Once again the field was lined up double file for the restart. As the race resumed green flag action, Bloomquist pulled away from the field with Matt Miller moving past O’Neal for the third position with O’Neal falling back to the fourth spot to do battle with Arp. By lap 65, twelfth starting, Wendell Wallace, had started his march to the front and took over the fifth position from Skip Arp and then on lap 66 would take the fourth position from Don O’Neal. Lap 67 would see the event’s third caution flag fly, which once again regrouped the field.

On the restart, mayhem would break out in the battle for the second position as Schlieper and Miller made contact in turn two causing both drivers to get sideways. Schlieper would manage to regroup his mount and keep from spinning, however Miller would get crossed up collecting the sixth place car of Jimmy Mars. Caution was displayed once again with both Miller and Mars retiring from the event. With Miller out of the event Wallace advanced into the third position, and on the restart he would take the second position from Schlieper.

Wallace would soon relinquish the second position back to Schlieper after a lap 69 restart allowed Schlieper to use the high line to race around Wallace for the runner up spot. As Wallace and Schlieper dueled for second, Bloomquist built a straight away lead on the field by lap 76. Lap 78 would find Wallace using a strong run exiting turn four to retake second place from Schlieper.

With less than twenty laps remaining Wallace kicked his GRT into high gear and began reducing Bloomquist’s lead by more than a car length a lap. Lap 92 would find Wallace on Bloomquist’s back bumper. Over the last eight laps, Wallace would try several different moves to take the lead, but would ultimately fall a half of a car length short of his second Show Me 100 triumph. Following Bloomquist and Wallace in the top ten final running order were Schlieper, O’Neal, Francis, Lanigan (started 22nd), Brian Birkhofer, Bill Frye, Jack Sullivan (started 17th), and Ray Cook (started 19th) .

Saturday night’s heat race events were claimed by Don O’Neal, Dan Schlieper, Scott Bloomquist, Steve Francis Freddy Smith, and Clint Smith. Ray Cook, Jeff Taylor, and Marshall Green took top honors in the three consolation races.

On Friday night, Ray Cook won the Manufacturer’s race with Wendell Wallace winning the Lunati’s Cams Race of Champions.

West Plains Motor Speedway would like to thank all of the fans, sponsors, and drivers who made the 13th Annual O’Reilly Show Me 100 such a big success.
