PADUCAH, KY - Four-time series champion Scott Bloomquist of
Mooresburg, TN drove to his third Xtreme DirtCar Series win of the season Monday night in the 50-lap main event at Paducah International Raceway. Bloomquist took the lead on lap seven, and then held off a late race challenge to post his 92nd XDCS career win in the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior/Custom Taurus.

After taking the lead from Terry English of Benton, KY, Bloomquist
opened up a full straightaway lead at one point in the race. The defending and two-time series champion Rick Eckert of York, PA took over the second spot on lap 39, and closed to within three car-lengths of Bloomquist at the checkered flag in front of a packed house.

"We've been trying some different shock and spring combinations with this car during the past few races, and I think we've found something that works well," Bloomquist said. "The car could run the middle groove and was really good from the center of the turns and off, while everyone else seemed to run a little tighter."

The $10,700 victory brought Bloomquist's "Drive For Five Alive" as he jumped from sixth to second in the point standings, and is now 99 points behind point leader Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound, WI.

Mars had a disastrous main event in his Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo. After starting from the pole position, Mars forgot to pull in the anchor on his ship, and he dropped through the pack to finish 13th. This ends Mars' streak of consecutive top ten finishes at 12.

Eckert got close at the end while Bloomquist worked through lapped traffic, but had to settle for second in the Raye Vest/Petroff Towing Rocket/Cornett Taurus. Eckert moved from fifth to third in points, nine points behind Bloomquist, as Eckert tries to become the first driver in series history to win three straight championships.

Don O'Neal of Martinsville, IN had an up and down night in the Petroff Towing Rayburn/Pro Power Monte Carlo. After starting third, O'Neal dropped back to seventh early in the race, used the outside groove to climb back up to second spot, but ended up the race where he started in the third position.

Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, IA only went in one direction throughout the race, and that was forward. Birkhofer started 17th, and drove his Seubert Calf Ranches Mastersbilt/Pro Power Monte Carlo to the fourth spot at the checkered flag to earn the $100 Advance Auto Parts Hard Charger of the Race Award. Birkhofer remains fourth in points, one point behind Eckert.

Randy Korte of Highland, IL had better luck on the track than getting to the speedway on Monday. Korte arrived late at the track after his transporter overturned just one mile from the pit gate. Korte's Mid-Continental Fuels Rocket/Race Tech Grand Prix escaped damage in the highway accident and carried him to a fifth-place finish. Everyone in the rig escaped injury.

Donnie Moran of Dresden, OH finished sixth in the QPI Tools Dirt
Ripper Monte Carlo, and Steve Francis of Ashland, KY brought the
Valvoline/Mopar Parts Rocket/Stanton Intrepid home in the seventh spot. Francis dropped from third to fifth in the points chase, 11 points behind Birkhofer.

The 1997 series champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR finished eighth in the J&J Steel Mastersbilt/Dickens Monte Carlo, and early race leader English took the ninth spot in the Petroff Towing/AAA Fence Rayburn/Runyon Monte Carlo. Billy Drake of Bloomington, IL rounded out the top ten in the Creative Kitchens Mastersbilt/Mullvain Grand Prix.

English grabbed the lead at the start of the race from the outside
front row followed by Bloomquist from the fourth starting spot, Mars, Joe Morris of Galatia, IL in the Morris Excavating Rocket/Runyon, Monte Carlo, Eckert and Korte. Morris drove under Mars for the third spot coming off the fourth turn on lap three, while Korte got around Eckert for fifth.

By lap five, English and Bloomquist began to pull away from the rest of the field with English running the high side, and Bloomquist working down on the bottom of the track. Behind the leaders, Korte drove inside Morris down the backstretch to take over the third spot.

Bloomquist worked inside English on lap six, and the pair raced
side-by-side for the next two laps, before Bloomquist had the lead outright by lap eight. With ten laps in the books, it was Bloomquist followed by English, Korte, Mars, Morris, Moran, Eckert, O'Neal, Matt Miller of Waterville, OH, and Randy Sellars of Mayfield, KY.

The first of only two cautions flag came out on lap 17 when Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR stalled the J&J Steel GRT/Craft Taurus in turn three. Wallace would return to the track for the double-file restart, as Bloomquist brought the field down for the green flag with English, Korte, Mars, Eckert, Moran, O'Neal, Francis, Miller, and Sellars in tow.

O'Neal used the double-file restart to his advantage, jumping from seventh to fourth riding the razor thin cushion near the wall, and coming off the fourth turn, Korte drove around English for the second spot. Morris had quickly faded out of the top ten before the caution flag came out, and he called it a night on lap 20.

At the halfway point, Bloomquist had a full straightaway lead on Korte, when O'Neal got busy on the high side of the track, and passed Korte for second. Debris on the front straightaway lit up the caution lamp for the second and final time on lap 26. During the caution period, Wallace retired from the event.

At the halfway point restart, Bloomquist led O'Neal, Korte, Eckert,
English, Moran, Francis, Birkhofer, Sellars in the RJS Automotive
Rayburn/Sellars Monte Carlo, and Moyer. The green flag action saw English move back around Eckert and Korte to reclaim the third spot, and by lap 28, Birkhofer was up to the sixth spot.

Bloomquist and O'Neal began to pull away from the field on lap 30, but behind them, a three-wide battle was being waged for the third spot on lap 34 with Korte on the bottom of the track, Eckert in the middle groove, and English rim riding. Eckert established himself in the third spot on lap 35, and began to close in on O'Neal.

Eckert got around O'Neal for the second spot on lap 39, but Bloomquist had again pulled out to a full straightaway advantage. With less than ten laps to go, Eckert began to chip away at the big lead Bloomquist had enjoyed for the most part of the race. On lap 46, Birkhofer, like Eckert, was on the move, as he passed Korte for the fourth spot.

With three laps to go, Bloomquist came upon heavy lapped traffic, as Eckert closed in. Three car-lengths was as close as Eckert would get, as O'Neal just edged Birkhofer for the third spot. There 21 of the 24 starters in the race still running at the end.

Steve Shaver of Parkersburg, WV was the Ringers Gloves Fast Qualifier among the 37 entrants, turning a lap around the 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval in 15.885 second for an average speed of 84.986 miles per hour driving the Bill Bland Towing/The Farm Used Auto Parts Rocket/Malcuit Monte Carlo.

Bloomquist, English, and Mars won the first three eight-lap heat races, and O'Neal picked up the $100 JE Pistons Bonus Award with a fourth heat race win. Mars earned the pole position for the main event by winning the four-lap Action Performance Dash with English, O'Neal, and Bloomquist trailing at the checkered flag.

Birkhofer won the first 10-lap consolation race, and the 1996 series champion Freddy Smith of Knoxville, TN took the second consy driving the White Oak Motorsports Warrior/Gaerte Intrepid. Miller was the Lucas Oil Rookie of the Race driving the McCullough Motorsports Rocket/Russell Baker Grand Prix.
