Brooks and Smyser cap off night with wins

The 2004 Miller Lite Summer Shootout Series rolled into Missouri's State Fair Speedway for round #6 of the 2004 championship and fans could have mistaken it for a twelve round title fight as all three winners fought off very tough fields for the wins.

2003 Late Model Track Champion Chris Smyser brought the Mike Crump Racing 00s to the Historic 1/2 and made it worth the trip in. Smyser started outside the front row and took the advantage over last weeks winner, Richard Foster, as the green flag waved over the field. Try as he might to build an advantage Smyser was dogged by the Holt's Summit driver for the entire 20 lap feature who continually looked for a way around the leader. Each time Foster was able to mount a challenge for the top spot Smyser was able to hold off his advances and found himself in the Winner's Circle as the checkered flag fell. Foster held on for the second spot with Chad Clark, Dave Meyer, and CJ Lyle filling out the top five. Smyser and Foster were joined by Centerview, MO's Jason Bodenhamer with heat race wins on the evening.

The Street Stock Division had become the Bobby Shane show as of late, but Warrensburg's John Brooks decided that it was his time to shine and put his familiar Orange #27 in the Winner's Circle. Shane started on the pole and set sail only to have his lead taken away by the #02 of Bob Gustin during the second lap. While the front two battled for position Brooks found himself in third and quickly in the hunt for the top spot. The top three were separated by mere feet for the next several laps until Brooks was finally able to slip by and take over the #1 spot on the sixth go round and from that point on kept his potent machine in the front taking the win. Shane was able to slip by Gustin for the runner up spot with Brian Mahalovich, and Marc Carter rounding out the top five at the line. Shane and Gustin paced the field at the green by virtue of their heat race wins.

The W-K Chevrolet-Buick Mighty Modifieds rolled their hotrods onto the track and when the dust settled the Desoto, KS hotshoe Dustin Boney rolled his machine into the Winner's Circle for his first win in the 2004 Miller Lite Summer Shootout Series. Boney raced from his outside front row starting position into the lead as the field took the green and built up a slight advantage over his closest pursuers. Behind Boney was a dogfight for position as drivers attempted to work their way into position to challenge Boney for the top spot. The field was was slowed twice during the 20 lap affair, but on each restart Boney was able to hold his advantage over the field. As the laps wound down Boney had built up a ten car lenght advantage, but Sedalia's Terry Shultz had worked his way into the runner up position and began to reel in the leader. Time would not be on Schultz's side as Boney took the win with Schultz falling five car lengths short of the leader. Fourteen starting John Logue finished third with Dave Meyer, and Steve Cain completing the top five at the line. Curt Potter, Dustin Boney, and Dave Meyer were able to hold off all challenges and come home with heat race wins.

Pit Notes
- With the W-K Chevrolet-Buick Modified win Dustin Boney becomes eligible for the Budweiser Progressive $. If Boney and his team can repeat the win on Saturday at Central Missouri Speedway there will be an added bonus paid out to them. Since the bonus wasn't collected during the first night it has rolled over to this event making the bonus $1,000 from the people at Budweiser. $800 from SFS, $1,000 from CMS and the $1,000 Budwesier bonus would make for a nice weekend.

- Boone, IA hotshoe John Logue pulled his hauler into the Historic 1/2 Mile to the surprise of many. Logue, who hadn't competed in Sedalia for several years, was on his way to the lake and decided to bring the car and stop off.

- 2000 Nascar Weekly Racing Series Champion Gary Webb made the trip down from Blue Grass, IA like he has many times in the past. Webb is always up on the wheel and puts on a great show for the fans.

- Bobby Shane was attempting to take his fourth Street Stock feature in a row, but settled for second. It's been a while since anybody has put that kind of winning streak together in any class at Missouri's State Fair Speedway.

- Slater, MO's Sonny Kimberling would be at the tops of anybody's list for Sportsman of the Year. Brother Rick's Modified broke during hot laps and the laid back Sonny handed over his ride for Rick to compete in. With limited time in the car Rick was still able to hold on for a top 10 on the night.
