SENOIA, GA – NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series point leader Dan Breuer of Troutman, NC took his second win of the season on Saturday night in the Spring Nationals 50 at New Senoia Raceway driving the AES Racing Special. Breuer started third and passed his teammate Steve Cooke of Mt. Airy, NC for the lead on lap three and never looked back.

Cooke finished second to give the AES Racing Team a one-two finish. Cooke was also the fast qualifier for the race when he drove his AES Racing Special around the 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval in 14.706 seconds to earn the pole position for the main event.

“Steve’s car was just a little bit tighter than my car, and he pushed up just enough in turn four to give me an opening on the bottom of the track to take the lead,” Breuer said. “This one-two finish really says a lot about the AES Racing Team. We had a great race on a great track in front of some great fans.”

VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year point leader Chase Edge of Lafayette, AL finished third in the Edge’s Gas Company Special to earn the VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Race Award, and two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Champion David Earl Gentry of Murfreesboro, TN took the fourth spot in the Eads Farms/Dixon Plumbing Special.

Jake Teague of Oliver Springs, TN was fifth in the Wade Body Shop Special, and Albert Cosnahan of Stillmore, GA finished sixth in the Braddy Electric GRT. Mark Rosner of Maryville, GA drove the J.T. Kerr Racing Equipment Stinger to a seventh-place finish, and Doug Ludwig of Grantville, GA was eighth in the Ludwig Racing GRT.

Jason Williams of Locust Grove, GA took the ninth spot in the Forest Park Sheet Metal Rocket and Troy Tyson of Fayetteville, GA started 20th in the Tyson Center Auto Sales GRT and rounded out the top ten to earn the Hedman Husler Award.

Cooke took the lead at the start of the race from the pole position, while Breuer drove underneath Edge in turns one and two to grab the second spot. Edge settled into third followed by Doug Stephens of Griffin, GA in the American Pie Pizza GRT and Gentry in the fourth and fifth spots respectively.

On lap three, Cooke’s car pushed up the banking in turn four which opened the door on the inside for Breuer, who took the opportunity to get under his teammate to take the lead. Breuer had opened up a two car-length advantage over Cook before the first of eight caution flags came on lap four when Tim Bright Jr. of Waco, GA spun the McKenzie’s Auto Parts Special in turn four.

When the field went back to green flag action, Bright spun once again in turn four and was ticketed with his second caution flag of the race. With the two spin rule, Bright was done for the night. Breuer led Cooke, Edge, Stephens, Gentry, Teague, Cosnahan, Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA in the Hedman Husler, Rosner, and Oliver Gentry of Newnan, GA in the Gentry Used Auto Parts GRT down for the restart.

Tootie Arnold of Bude, MS spun the Autozone GRT in turn two on lap nine to bring out the third caution flag. After the restart, Rosner and Oliver Gentry got around Turner on lap 12 to take over the eighth and ninth spots respectively. Breuer began to encounter the cars on the tail end of the lead lap on the 19th tour, but was able to maintain a four car-length lead over Cooke.

Arnold lit the yellow bulb for a second time on lap 25 when a steering failure sent him into the turn two wall. Arnold was uninjured in the crash, but it ended his race for the evening. When the field went back to green, Edge and Stephens battled for the third spot. On lap 31, Stephens got the inside line on Edge coming off the fourth turn to take the position.

On lap 39, Tyson spun in turn four to bring out the fifth caution flag and would have to go to the tail of the cars on the lead lap to restart in the 16th spot. During the 12 remaining laps, Tyson would move up six more spots to finish tenth. Breuer led Cooke, Stephens, Edge, and Gentry down for the restart.

Stephens was battling with Cooke for the second spot on lap 43 when he suddenly slowed to a stop with a mechanical failure in turn three to bring out the sixth caution flag. Stephens was done for the night, and his misfortune earned him the Dominator Race Products Hard Luck Award.

After the restart, the field stayed green for one lap before Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS cut down a right-rear tire on his Billy Riels Racing GRT and stopped in turn three to light up the caution lamp for the seventh time on lap 44. Lee changed the tire and got back out for the restart only to be part of a multi-car tangle on the backstretch on lap 47.

Lee got tangled up with Mark Tice of Avon, MS in the Precision Marine Trak-Star and Frank Wilson of Harold, FL in the Wilson Lumber Trak-Star. During the caution period, Oliver Gentry had to give up the ninth spot and go to the pits to change a flat tire.

The restart order for the four-lap dash to the finish saw Breuer leading Cooke, Edge, David Earl Gentry, Teague, Cosnahan, Rosner, Tod Darda of LaGrange, GA in the PW Performance GRT, Ludwig, and Williams to the green flag. Darda fell off the pace on the last lap and dropped out of the top ten while Breuer took the checkered flag with a .846 second margin of victory over Cooke.

Breuer now has 642 points to hold a 26-point margin over David Earl Gentry in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series point standings. Gentry with 616 points has 38-point lead over Turner in the third spot. Lee is fourth in the series points chase with 480, and Edge is fifth overall in the standings with 470 points and he also leads the VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year standings.

Cooke is sixth with 456 points followed by Tice in the seventh spot and second in the VP Racing Fuels RoY standings with 420 points. Wilson is eighth with 386 points, and Arnold is ninth with 320 points. The top nine drivers in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series point standings have competed in all seven events held so far this season.

The next pair of races for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series will be on June 3 at Oglethorpe Speedway Park in Savannah, GA with a 40-lap $2,000-to-win event, and then on June 4 at Screven Motor Speedway in Sylvania, GA for a 50-lap $2,500-to-win race.
