(Warrensburg, MO) Another race season has come and gone at Warrensburg's own Central Missouri Speedway (CMS). Although promoters Earl and Susan Walls were not expected to promote the track during 2009, an overwhelming amount of phone and email messages poured in after the couple announced they would not open the track at the end of last season and the couple felt compelled to swing open the gates for another year of Saturday night racing for the fans and drivers. Their decision proved popular as drivers from 112 different hometowns registered to compete at the track.

CMS hosted sixteen regular Saturday events and three separate two-night weekend specials this season, for a total of nineteen race nights highlighted by the Independence Day weekend $5,000-to-win Tom Wilson Memorial BBQ. There is no doubt the Walls' decision to add over 70 loads of clay to the race surface last winter led to the track's resurgence and popularity with drivers and fans. A statement backed by the increased percentages of cars finishing feature events and average overall car counts in all four racing divisions competing at the track in 2009.

CMS is the home of the 'mighty' modifieds and drivers in this division did not disappoint this year as 108 different competitors were shown on the final standings sheet. Aaron Marrant of Orrick, Missouri is quickly writing himself into the track's record books. The young driver became a three-time modified champion this year by holding off arguably the toughest pool of modified drivers competing in the greater Kansas City Metro. Marrant finished the year off in grand style by taking a $3,000-to-win victory during the Labor Day weekend special event; he also posted two other feature wins during his championship season. Chasing Marrant to the finish in the standings were Dean Wille of Warrensburg in second, five-time feature winner Jason Thompson of Concordia third, feature winner Tim Karrick of Basehor, KS fourth, and feature winner Dave Meyer of Concordia fifth. There were nine different feature winners in nineteen races contested among the modifieds this year. Terry Phillips claimed the $5,000 first-place prize by racing to the victory in the July Special. Lenexa, Kansas driver Don Crnkovich drove to victory lane in the track's annual Memorial Day $3,000-to-win special event last May. Average car count this year for the modifieds was 32 per night.

ULMA late models made a triumphant return to CMS this year four weeks into the season. At the beginning of the year, promoter Earl Walls asked the late model drivers to remain loyal to the speedway and the drivers did just that as the average ULMA car count swelled to twenty, an all-time record average car count at CMS during its 26 years of existence! It took eleven weeks to register a repeat ULMA winner this season as eleven separate drivers drove to victory lane at least once at the track among sixteen features competed. Jon Binning defended his 2008 title by holding off a consistent Randy Ainsworth to win the championship. Binning registered five feature wins throughout the year, including the largest-ever ULMA first-place payout of $1,700 when he claimed the track's annual late model special in early September. Ainsworth, of Excelsior Springs, Missouri finished a strong second behind the champion and drove to victory in one feature event. Two-time late model track champion Kevin Coyne of Kingsville, Missouri also registered a feature win and finished third in the standings. Feature race winners Steve Clancy of Odessa, Missouri and Robbie Test of Jefferson City, Missouri finished fourth and fifth in the final standings. On the final night of racing there were 30 competitors on hand, an all-time record car count. A total of 53 separate drivers were listed on the final ULMA point's rundown this season.

In the street stock division, former champion Brian Johnson of Independence, Missouri earned another championship as he edged out Kingsville driver Michael Mullins for the title. Along the way, Johnson drove his car to victory lane on eight separate occasions during main events. Mechanical gremlins plagued Johnson near the end of the season as Mullins closed in on him during the final weeks of competition but Johnson ultimately kept his car ahead of Mullins on the final night to earn the crown. Mullins had a strong season on his way to second overall and registered one feature win this year. Finishing third was 2008 champion Nic Bennett of Oak Grove. Four-time feature winner Chad Eickleberry of Warrensburg finished fourth in the final rundown with Herb Dannar of Holden rounding out the top five. There were eight different winners in nineteen features contested. Average car count this year was fourteen and there were 47 separate drivers listed on the final point's roster at the end of the season. Terry Schultz took home the biggest street stock first-place money of the year by winning the track's annual street stock special on Memorial Day weekend.

Youth prevailed in the track's b-modified division in 2009 as an average of 25 drivers were on hand for nineteen race nights. Heading into the final week, the title was on the line among then leader Jacob Ebert of Oak Grove and Ethan Isaacs of Bonner Springs, Kansas. When the dust settled, it was Isaacs who unexpectedly came away with the crown after a post-race inspection relegated Ebert to the bottom of the finishing order. Isaacs' championship was extremely meaningful to the young driver as the car he drove throughout the year was a special tribute to his racing family and more impressive, the car itself was his high school senior class project that he built himself! The champion drove to victory one time for a feature win on the way to the title. Warrensburg driver Chris Brockway claimed three feature wins en route to an impressive second place finish in the final standings, his best season ever. Ebert finished third in the overall standings and posted two feature wins during the year in a consistent run throughout the year. Ethan's younger Brother, Lucas, finished the year in fourth position and claimed one feature win. Michael King of Orrick, Missouri rounded out the top five in the final standings. Six different drivers claimed victories this season in nineteen feature races. Brad Smith took this year's annual b-modified special event, which was just one of his eleven different main event wins this season! There were 71 drivers listed on the track's final point standings sheet for the b-modifieds.

All division champions and top-tier drivers in the final standings will receive their accolades at the annual Central Auto Racing Boosters banquet, which will take place on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at the KCI Expo center. Doors will open at 4 P.M.; dinner begins at 5 with awards presentations following at 6. Banquet tickets may be purchased until November 1st from Susan Walls by contacting her at (816) 229-1338. With the holiday season right around the corner, racing enthusiasts can treat their favorite race fans for Christmas with season tickets for the 2010 race season. The Walls have added another 20 loads of clay to the track and it has already been worked into the speedway's surface in preparation for next year. Additional improvements are planned on the grounds of the speedway during the off-season. Next season will mark seventeen years of promotion for the Walls at CMS.
