Excitement filled the air from both race fans and drivers as they filed into Central Missouri Speedway for Sedalia News Journal Race Night and the first Modified "Big One" of the 2004 season and nobody left disappointed in the action they had just seen.

Midwest Modified standout Chad Lyle has been in a slump of sorts with not being able to collect a win to this point of 2004, but he changed that in a big way as he roared into victory lane after battling with 43 other cars on the evening. Lyle's win was no easy task as he rolled off for the feature in the tenth starting position and steadily moved his way to the front of the pack, taking the lead on the 35th lap of the 40 lap affair.

At the drop of the 40 lap Modified A feature it looked as though pole sitter Robbie Test was going to be tough to beat. Unfortunately his time at the front was short lived as a tap from behind sent the front runner spinning in turn 1 early in the second lap. Gary Blackburn Jr. then assumed the point and the two-time 2004 winner had his machine hooked up and running until the 7x of Lance Kobush made his move to the front on lap 9. Kobush held onto command of the field, but Blackburn and Chad Lyle began to wage a battle for the second spot with Lyle finally coming out on top and setting his sights on the leader. With the laps winding down and the leaders in heaving lapped traffic, Lyle took advantage of his high line run to get the run he needed on Kobush who was pinned behind a lapped car on lap 35. Once out front Lyle stretched his lead to nearly 10 carlengths and flashed under the double checkered flags for the $2,000 payday. Kobush was able to hold off Blackburn for the runner-up spot with 19th starting Marc Dotson coming home fourth and Dustin Boney rounding out the top 5. Six heat races were contested to pair down the field with Robbie Test, Gary Blackburn, Dean Wille, Danny Scogham, Lance Kobush, and Joe Bradshaw taking home the wins. The 24 car field would be set after two consolation events would be run with Marc Dotson and Dave Meyer claiming wins and moving on.

The Limited Late Model division saw a repeat winner for the second time this season as Kevin Coyne wheeled his familiar #22 around Owen Evinger on lap 11 of the 15 lap event. Coyne began the feature in the 11th in the 11 car field and at the drop of the green flag immediately began a march to the front looking to snare the top spot from Evinger. At the checkered flag Coyne was able to hold off Evinger with Jim Wilson, Steven Clancy, and Jason King completing the top five. Owen Evinger and Ryan Lovercamp shared the spotlight with heat race wins.

Not to be outdone, Warrensburg's John Brooks also started at the tail of his feature event, 20th out of 20 cars, and was able to claim the win when he made a pass of lap 13 just as leader Cole Wimmer was slowing for a flat tire. The win by Brooks was the trifecta on the season as this was his fourth win of the season and third in a row. Following Brooks across the line were Fred King, Tammy Korff, Jeremy Johnson, and John Cantrell with top five finishes. Cole Wimmer, John Ebert, and Marc Carter were able to hold on for the heat race victories.

The beginner Hobby Stock division saw a tough field of cars roll onto the track and at the conclusion of the event Gary Newport found himself accepting the winner's glory. Newport took advantage of his second row starting spot to quickly move to the front and never relinquish the lead. The charge of Danny Everts came up short as he settled for second with Joe Corbett, Steve Evans, and Kirk Ulmer rounding out the top five. Everts held off all comers as he was victorious in the lone heat race.

The Dwarf Cars and Mod Lites were also on hand for the evening and fans saw Hal Orndorff of Marshall, ILL zip across the line to take home the victory. Orndorff took advantage of race long leader David Raffurty getting out of shape in turn four to take over the top spot with four laps to go and was never challenged after that point. Justin Buchholz, Scott Spink, and Danny Lane filled out the top five as they crossed the line.

Mindy Evans kicked off the evenings festivities with a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem.

Cerri Darling and Nikki Bruns were on hand to present the trophies to all of the winners on the evening.
