BEAR LAKE, PA – May 12, 2010 – Chub Frank is regularly moving forward in World of Outlaws Late Model Series A-Mains, but that's actually one of his problems.
The veteran standout from Bear Lake, Pa., is simply giving himself too many opportunities to pick up multiple positions – because he's not qualifying well enough to start near the front of the field.
Frank, 48, experienced what he called a "broken record" weekend during his May 7-8 trip to the Midwest with the World of Outlaws Late Model Series, once again failing to put together complete nights. He finished a quiet 15th in the 'Land of Lincoln 50' on Friday evening at Lincoln (Ill.) Speedway and placed 11th (after using a provisional spot to start 23rd) in the 50-lap 'My Old Kentucky Home Shootout' on Saturday night at Bluegrass Speedway in Bardstown, Ky.
"We just **** at qualifying," said Frank, shaking his head at his weekend results. "I don't know what the problem is. We gotta get the car better early in the night. We're working hard, but we just keep putting ourselves in a hole that's hard to dig out from."
Frank actually had one of his better time-trial efforts of the season at Lincoln, qualifying 10th-fastest in the 39-car field. But he managed only a fourth-place finish in his heat race to earn the 14th starting spot for the A-Main, during which he was never a factor en route to a 15th-place finish.
On Saturday night at Bluegrass, Frank clocked in 20th in the 40-car time-trial session and was racing uphill the rest of the show. He missed transferring by two spots in a B-Main and used a WoO LMS provisional to gain entry to the A-Main.
Showing some speed, Frank managed to climb forward to finish a respectable 11th behind the wheel of his backup Rocket car, a machine he prepares and maintains for Canadian Peter Mantha Jr. But he could only wonder how much higher he could have finished had he been blessed with a better starting position.
"The car wasn't great, but at least we went forward," said Frank. "If we could've gotten our car the way it was in the feature earlier in the night, we might have been O.K. We have to figure out how to do that."
Frank will continue that pursuit this week with a WoO LMS doubleheader on the East Coast, visiting Delaware International Speedway on Thursday night (May 13) and Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway on Saturday evening (May 15). Frank, who enters the weekend ranked ninth in the WoO LMS points standings (186 points behind leader Tim McCreadie), has won at both tracks during his illustrious career.
