Warrensburg, Missouri
It took an additional day to pave the way for the final Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg for it's final event of the year; the "Miller Lite 2003 Season Championship/Fan Appreciation Race Night"! Rain fell all day during the scheduled Saturday, so it was held- over a day to run the 20 event, 97 car ending to the best-ever season at the 1/3rd mile, high-banked clay oval.
"I didn't want to leave the final event just hanging there after so many of these racers battled season-long to shoot for the top honors," track owner and director Earl Walls explained. "I knew the crowd count would be down for a Sunday night event that was unplanned and because of the time of year it is. But I think the drivers needed the support anyway. Most of these guys were here all year, every week, and I wanted to make sure we did the same for them".
Actually, the crowd was good enough to prove that there are many great 'fan base' folks that would come anytime….. and they saw another super-series of events from all four classes.
Basehor, Ks' Tim 'Blue Bunny' Karrick and 'Movin' Dave Meyer from Concordia turned in a skill-proving run as they ran the entire way, side by side; Karrick on 'the edge', Meyer on the inside pole during the time shortened, 17 lap Farm and Home of Warrensurg/T-Mobile Mighty Modified main. The results; Karrick won by a mere wheel over Meyer for $1,000 compared to Meyer's $900 second, Tom Karrick couldn't find extra room and had to settle for third and $800, $700 went to the skills of "Mr. Experience' Bobby Layne while new to CMS, hot-shoe Dale Marriott, scored a convincing fifth for 600 smackers.
Alan Deatherage from Concordia took it easy for once to guard his points lead for the crown. Even with that in mind, he still finished 8th in the main for $400. He was definitely thinking correctly as it was also worth another $1000 in points money for winning his first racing championship ever. He'll collect that dough at the 51 Annual Central Auto Racing/CMS Banquet on Saturday night, December 6th.
Ryan Lovercamp from Concordia won his first-ever main event of any kind last week when he copped the Country Kitchen Limited Late Model feature. It showed that it definitely boosted his confidence as he turned right around and did it again. After running LLM's at CMS for many years, Kevin 'kid' Coyne from Blue Springs pulled in his initial championship. It was his big, 9 feature win run that proved he had the 'right stuff'.
Sedalia's 'Cool' Clayton Campbell became the only two-digit feature winner in any class at CMS this year as he captured his 10th victory in the Missouri Beef Industries Council Street Stock main event. With only half-a-year experience behind him, 21 year-old racing phenom and second generation racer Jesse 'the dealer' Wheeler, now the owner of three feature wins, tacked down the class' championship title.
Also starting his short but sweet racing career last year, Belton's Joe Chevalier, who copped five feature wins, came out the overall top-pointer for his gold crown. Kenny Potter outran Joe for his fifth victory of the year in the 15 lap, Odessa Pool, Patio and Spa WOFC Sprint main affair.
Much in the way of media news will be released about many new things for 2004 at CMS, kept up to date all winter long on CMS' website. Make it a habit to log in weekly @ www.centralmissourispeedway.com .
