DODGE CITY, Kan. (March 19) – Never at a loss for superlatives, promoter Ed Beckley sees a bright future for IMCA’s Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod division at his Dodge City Raceway Park and Liberal Fairgrounds Speedway race tracks.

Both southwest Kansas speedplants add the open wheeled class to regular race programs this season, joining IMCA Modifieds and IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars.

“Everybody keeps saying the Northern SportMods are a fun class. I think they’re a great class,” Beckley said. “I’ve counted 17 pieces of iron around Dodge ready to go racing and more being built in Liberal. We didn’t have one when we announced this last winter.”

Both economics and the set of rules that allows drivers to compete at other sanctioned tracks make the SportMods attractive.

“Hopefully, SportMods will be a good swinging door to get drivers to the next level or even keep them coming back to the track,” said Beckley. “They’re a perfect bridge to cover the expensive river we call racing. “

Saturday point races at Dodge start May 15 and run through Sept. 25. Liberal has five Sunday dates, opening with the Nut Cokley Memorial on May 16, June 27, July 18, Aug. 29 and the Sept. 29 Don Graves Memorial season champi¬onship.

Dodge City will host a historical event when Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods and their Southwest Racing Specialties Southern SportMod brethren are matched in the $3,000 to win Boot Hill North/South Shootout on Oct. 2-3.

“This race is new to IMCA, and it makes perfect sense to have it here at our facility. We are about halfway in between the hotbed of Northern SportMods and the Southern SportMods,” Beckley said. “Everyone says how comparable they are and on Oct. 3 everyone will know.”

“We’re excited about the whole season,” he added, citing that special as well as growing car counts and the caliber of competition in both his Modified and Stock classes.

Dodge, Liberal and newly-sanctioned Dirtona Raceway at Hugoton are all in the ButlerBuilt Central Region for Modi¬fieds and the Probe Industries Northern Region for Stock Cars.
