Doubleheader MSCCS Action This Weekend!

Columbus, MS-The 2004 Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series will stage rounds #5 and #6 of the 2004 season as the tour takes a southern trek at two of the area’s hottest racetracks making for a fine doubleheader weekend for the fans and drivers in south Mississippi and the entire gulf coast region.

Action gets underway this Friday night at the rejuvenated Southern Speedway(formerly Hattiesburg Speedway) in Hattiesburg, Mississippi with a 40-lap A-Main paying $2,000 to win. The ¼-mile speedplant has seen resurgence of late under new ownership and with the guidance of skillful race director Aubrey McKenzie. The speedway has received excellent Super Late Model participation this year and is expecting a fantastic turnout as the MSCCS makes its first appearance of the season in Hattiesburg.

Action will then shift down to the coast as the MSCCS makes its second appearance of the season at South Mississippi Speedway located in Long Beach, Mississippi for a $2,500 to win 50-lap showdown. The MSCCS season opener on the coast was a barn burner with Jimbo McDuffie talking the $5,000 win in a great race with a stellar field on hand. Track operator Bryan Cuevas and staff are anxiously awaiting the MSCCS faithful for Saturday night’s big show.



The MSCCS has seen parity as the norm early this season as their have been 4 different event winners, 4 different pole winners, and a points race that has the top five drivers separated by only 65 points. The car count is holding strong and steady averaging close to 40 cars per race with a very potent 19 drivers with perfect attendance, that have entered all four events on the season.



Reigning MSCCS Champion Scott Slay currently sits atop the points standings with Dennis Duncan closing into second place with “The Lugnut” Rodney Wing in third. Louisiana’s Chris Wall is having a stellar Rookie campaign sitting in fourth place with David Breazeale residing in fifth place.



Each night of racing action will consist of Brown Engineering Pole Qualifying locking in the top eight qualifiers with positions 9 through 20 set by Cliburn Tank Lines B-Main events plus two provisionals to complete the 22 car starting field.



The Boland Performance Rookie of the Year battle has Chris Wall leading the RotY title chase with Josh Fuller of Marion, Mississippi in second and Greenville’s Greg Fore in 3rd.



The Brown Engineering “Fast Gun” Award currently has Chris Wall, Anthony Rushing, Randy Walters, and David Breazeale all tied with one pole award each.



Southern Speedway in Hattiesburg is located by taking I-59 to exit 59, then 2.5 mi. east on US 98, then .7 mi. south on US 49, then west (south of Hattiesburg). Information can also be obtained by contacting Aubrey McKenzie at 601-765-6900 or the track on raceday at 601-545-3333.

Adult grandstand admission is $15 and pit passes $25 each night.
