PRICE, Utah (May 27-28) – Travis Metz and Michael Hale both drove to victory lane when the EQ Cylinder Heads Wild West Modified Tour made its rescheduled Memorial Weekend visit to Desert Thunder Raceway.
Metz nabbed his career fourth IMCA Modified series victory on Friday night at Price. Hale followed on Saturday with his first tour triumph.
Both features were qualifying events for the 2011 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot.
Metz started outside row one and took the opening night lead from Brad Boyer on the first lap. He ran in front until lap 25, when Craig Teter found his way by.
Metz powered back to the point the next time around and led the rest of the way. Hale took second from Teter with just two laps left. Completing the top five were defending series champion Zane DeVilbiss and 2009 tour king Justen Yeager.
Bryan Wordelman was the hard charger as he advanced 10 positions to finish ninth.
Primed by his runner-up showing on Friday, Hale raced from his eighth starting spot to win the Saturday show.
Hale took the lead from David Karst on lap 11, when he went from fifth to the front in a single circuit.
He never looked back from that point, winning ahead of Yeager, Don Baisch, Metz and Wordelman.
Rick Spangler was the hard charger as he advanced 12 spots to finish eighth.
The Price dates were postponed from May 20-21 because of inclement weather.
EQ Wild West Modified Tour history will be made at the next doubleheader, when Battle Mountain, Nev., Raceway hosts the series’ first-ever midweek shows on Wednesday and Thursday, June 15 and 16.
Both features will pay $1,000 to win, are 2012 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational qualifying events and double as Evenson Law Office Iron Man Challenge Series races.
