Jamaica, VA – Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway offices are hard at work making preparations for what is set to be a historic event for big block modifieds in the Commonwealth State this Thursday May 1st. The 2nd Annual Paul Sawyer Memorial presented by Thurston Spring Service, Inc. will mark the second visit by the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series big block modifieds to the very fast ½ mile in Jamaica, VA. Only this time it will be for an almost $50,000 purse.

“Everything is full speed ahead for Thursday’s Paul Sawyer Memorial; we’ve had a tremendous amount of calls in reference to the tornadoes that devastated Southeastern Virginia yesterday, thank you to everyone that has checked to see if we are ok. The area where the track is located was not affected by the storm and we are hard at work getting the track ready for this historic event. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all that were affected by the storms,” commented Track owner Bill Sawyer.

The history making 60 lap, $10,000 to win affair for the northeast big block modifieds will be paired with a $5000 to win super late model event as well. The almost $50,000 purse is the largest one day pay out in the series history.

“This is easily the biggest single-day event in Advance Series history for the Big-Blocks,” declared Cory Reed, DIRTcar Northeast Director of Competition & Track Sanctioning. “Right now only Super DIRT Week at the Syracuse Mile and Eastern States Weekend at Orange County can rank ahead of this one. With $10-grand on the line for 60 laps of green flag racing it’s already attracted the top racers from up and down the coast. We can’t thank the Sawyer Family enough for giving our teams this great opportunity to participate in such a special show and kick off the tour in the most grandiose fashion.”

The event will also feature NASCAR stars Kenny Schrader and Kenny Wallace behind the wheel of a dirt car on the ultra fast ½ mile facility in Jamaica, VA. Schrader will be behind the wheel of his super late model with Wallace piloting a big block modified for only the second time in his career.

Competitor gates for Thursday, May 1st will open at 4pm with spectator gates opening at 5pm. On track activities will begin at 6:45pm with hot laps.
