EUNICE, N.M. (Feb, 9) – Two former track champions will be calling the shots this season at Cardinal Motor Speedway.
Chris Meyers and Toby Herring partner to promote the ¼-mile clay oval at Eunice, where four IMCA sanctioned divisions will run every other Saturday night from April 2 to Sept. 17.
“I raced here for eight years and Toby has been here at least that long,” said Meyers. “We got to talk¬ing after last season and decided to see what we could do as far as advertising and sponsorship, then see where we were on Jan. 1 before we decided if we wanted to pursue this any further.”
“After the first of the year, we decided to go for it,” he continued. “And here we are.”
Regular race programs will feature the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and IMCA Southern SportMods.
“The Modifieds and Southern SportMods have been popular here since day one and we have high expecta¬tions for the Stock Cars,” said Meyers. “I really think they’re going to come back in this region. The rule changes as far as engine options are really going to help.”
Hobby Stocks are expected see a major infusion of young talent from the local 4-cylinder class.
Meyers got his start in the Hobby division, earning IMCA national rookie of the year honors as well as the Cardinal track title in 2003.
After a successful stint in the Stocks, Meyers ruled the Southern SportMod roost at Cardinal in 2007 and 2009, finishing as national runner-up in the latter campaign.
Herring won the Modified crown at Cardinal in 2009.
A third former track champ on staff is tech inspector Tommy Kays, who topped Stock Car point stand¬ings at Eunice in 2001 and again in 2002.
“We don’t have any major improvements planned this year,” Meyers said. “We’ll add dirt to the racing sur¬face, hopefully upgrade the PA system and do our best to stay ahead of regular maintenance. We want to make everything as good as possible and get a year under our belts before we do anything crazy.”
Cardinal will be part of IMCA’s ButlerBuilt South Central Region for Modifieds and Stephenville Starter Southern Regions for Stock Cars and for Hobby Stocks.
