West Plains, MO (6/18/05) – Bill Frye finally shook the monkey off of his back to pick up his first Stacker 2 Mid America Racing Series triumph of the 2005 campaign on Saturday night at West Plains Motor Speedway in West Plains, Missouri.

Jack Sullivan from Greenbriar, Arkanas was the event’s JFR Graphics pole qualifier and rolled off the grid from the inside front row with current series’ point’s leader, Wendell Wallace to his outside. At the drop of the green flag Wallace took control of the lead with Sullivan, fourth starting Bill Frye, and Jeff Floyd in tow as the leaders battled three wide on the first lap. As Wallace motored away from the field in the race’s early stages, the driver on the move was Bill Frye, who overtook Sullivan for the second position on the second lap and set his sights on Wallace. Another driver on the move was eighth starting Terry Phillips, who cracked the top five on the third circuit, when he raced past Justin Wells for fifth. As the race endured its early stages, Wallace was the leader, but Frye was beginning to catch him, and when the leaders entered lapped traffic on lap nine, Frye began to see the opportunity that he was looking for come into fruition. Frye pulled even with Wallace at the flag stand as the pair completed lap eleven. Over the next lap the duo was dead even with Frye working the hub and Wallace working the middle of the track. Exiting turn four on the twelfth circuit, Frye used a strong run on the bottom to take the lead from Wallace. Once at the point, Frye set sail and left the field in his rear view mirror.

Wallace would maintain the second position through the race’s mid stages as Jack Sullivan slowly began to reel him in. By the race’s mid stages, Floyd and Phillips were also in a heated battle for the fourth position with wholesale slide jobs being exchanged between the pair. Phillips finally took sole possession of the fourth spot on lap twenty-one.

Frye found himself in heavy lapped traffic by the twenty-third circuit, and at times he would go three wide with the traffic as he tried to extend his lead on Wallace and Sullivan. Wallace would erase some of Frye’s lead by lap thirty, but Frye would soon dispose of the traffic, and once again motor away from the field. Over the last few laps Wallace and Sullivan began to battle for the second position with Wallace managing to hold off Sullivan. Frye went on to take the win in front of his hometown crowd, who were on their feet cheering as he took the lap forty checkers in the caution free affair. Wallace, Sullivan, Phillips, and Floyd rounded out the top five.

A twenty-one car field, representing four states, signed in for the event with Jack Sullivan, Wendell Wallace, and Jeff Floyd winning the heat races.
