Gas Cap Question ?

Finding replacement parts for a guy is very different and a bunch of BS. I can guarantee you that I would have never got an official to run around the pits searching for anything on my car while I sat on the track holding up the race.

I too believe that it is in the rules book that the cap must be chained to the cell or zip tied. Whatever it takes. However the new RCI fuel cells have a small screw on cap so how do they expect us to chain it? Not like a 30 sec job to do on the other style caps with the D-handle. So this is really one of them useless rules now.

The only thing that can be done now is do what they do to most people. Blackflag them from the race. Make them pull in and find a cap before returning to the tail end of the field. Why should some get special treatment and not others? It was your fault or your crews fault for forgeting it so you should pay the consequence. I know things get overlooked in a rush but come on be alittle more careful. Gas can and will ignite.

So just remember this situation people. This is everyones free pass to leave ur cap off one night and not get sent to the back. Now dont leave it off on purpose bc it is dangerous but if by chance it does happen just remember this situation so you can get a free pass.

I think the only positive thing about this is that finally Jeff Herzog didnt win the feature....;)

1st off I am the official that was given the gas cap and put it on Troy's car for him.
I don't recall "running" around the pit area trying to find him one.
I went toward his pit and told them he needed one. Lucky for him he pits right next to where I am.
His crew didn't give me the gas cap. If memory serves me correct it came from a crew guy for the 70 modified.
Troy was not black flagged because a caution came out for a spin in turns 3 & 4. Lucky once again, because he would've had it not.
As far as the race being held for this all to happen. THAT IS NOT TRUE!!!! Troy was back in line at least a min or two before we were ready to go green again. Cautions that come out with one lap down are usually longer because the cars are usually bunched up and the scorers are making sure they have it right.

Yes the final call was made by the director of competition, and yes there was some varying opinions among the officials.

I'll tell you straight what my opinion is/was and it's that he should retain his position. I'll also tell you why. In my years around a race track I've seen officials and in my 3 years as an official I have done many things to aid a driver in being able to continue on in a race. NONE OF WHICH DO I HAVE TO DO!!!! I've had pit crews hand me things such as hood pins to put on. Bungy straps to hold sheet metal up to keep from dragging. I've pulled noses off that were torn half off. Put window nets up. The list goes on and on. Like I said, none of that stuff is the job of an official, it's done as a favor. So the only way to eliminate any gray area or any accusation of favoring someone and not others, would be to institute a rule that officials don't touch cars period!!!!! If a car needs something addressed pull in. No questions and no explanations!!!!

Pitdrifter, Ralph was the one running around looking for the gas cap on the front straight if im not mistaken, your on the back straight? And im sorry but the race was delayed after the official in Turn 4 couldnt find one so he pulled around to the back where you were.

I wasn't aware of what went on over there. But, like I said, what us officials do for racers is done as a favor to the racer and obviously there is some gray area. I think it will be made black and white to avoid situations such as this.

tommy,i would think there would be some where on a rci cap to attach a chain,,drill a small hole on the grip part and use a sprial key ring...got a better idea,,give every one 2 weeks to teather their caps or they dont get to race....use wire ties,or baling wire.....

For the record I think Allied is the best out there. I have defended them in the past and will in the future. As a fan in the stands I appreciate sheet metal pulled off the cars it eleminates no cars left on the track some nights. I never would have posed this question if I had received an answer Sat Night. Helping a racer is flippin AWESOME... But bottom line make it the same for all.. That is all I am sayin ! The same for all..
