Gateway Notes for the week of April 7

Columbia, Mo.-native and 2006 Gateway International Raceway NASCAR Nationwide Series winner Carl Edwards won his third race of the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series when he took the checkered flag at Texas Motor Speedway Sunday. Dale Earnhardt Jr., who won at GIR as a driver in 1998 and 1999 and as the car owner to Martin Truex Jr., in 2004, was the pole winner for the event, finishing 12th. Clint Bowyer, who will return to Gateway on July 19th for the Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers 250 with Cup Series stars Edwards, David Ragan and David Reutimann, finished tenth.

On Saturday, the NASCAR Nationwide Series raced at TMS with Kyle Busch finally getting an NNS win. Bowyer, a Kansas native and fan of the 2008 NCAA Champion Jayhawks, finished third; Joplin, Mo.-native and former MB Motorsports driver Jamie McMurray finished fifth; Ragan finished eighth; three-time National Midget Champion and 2008 Chili Bowl-winning car owner Jason Leffler finished ninth; and defending Nationwide Series champion Edwards finished 13th.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series was off this past weekend and will return to action April 26th when they race at Kansas Speedway. The defending winner of that race is Illinois native Erik Darnell.

The NHRA POWERade Series was off last weekend, but returns to action in Sin City for the SummitRacing.com Nationals at The Strip at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Defending winners are Robert Hight (Funny Car), 2005 GIR winner Brandon Bernstein (Top Fuel), and 2004 GIR winner Greg Anderson (Pro Stock). ESPN2 will provide television coverage. The event this weekend in Las Vegas kicks off a run of three-consecutive weeks of NHRA POWERade Series action that takes them to Atlanta next week and wraps up at Gateway International Raceway May 2-4 for the O'Reilly Midwest Nationals.
