MERIDIAN, MS – David Gentry of Lewisburg, TN took his seventh StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series win of the season on Saturday night in the Coca Cola 60 at Whynot Motorsports Park. Gentry put his Dixon Plumbing Mastersbilt in the lead on lap 24 passing Mike Boland of Cuba, AL in the Ware Construction GRT, and then covered the bottom of the track for the victory.

Boland tried to make an outside move on Gentry with ten laps to go. Boland got alongside Gentry coming off the second turn, but Gentry held his inside line, and pulled away in lapped traffic to post a ten car-length victory.

“The track was a lot different tonight than it was last night, and it had us all guessing on what tires to run,” Gentry said. “I saw Boland a couple of times, and when I saw him on the outside, I knew it too slick for him to get by me out there.”

Boland had to settle for the second spot, with third going to StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series West Region point leader Lucky Keeton of Toomsuba, MS in the Charlotte’s Toy GRT. Jeff Fields of Aragon, GA took the fourth spot in the WMF Racing Products Mastersbilt, and Jeff Smith of Villanow, GA was fifth in the Allsouth Racing Products Warrior.

Mark Tice of Hollandale, MS finished sixth in the TNT Graphics Mastersbilt. J.D. Henry of Terry, MS started The Strength Center Rayburn 23rd and finished seventh to earn the NeSmith Chevrolet Hard Charger Award.

Shannon Buckingham of Morristown, TN took the eighth spot in the S&S Millwright Barry Wright, and Talbert Goldman of Meridian, MS was ninth to take the Rookie of the Race Award. Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA rounded out the top ten in the Turner Excavating Hicks.

Boland took the lead on the first lap from his outside front row starting spot. Boland ducked under pole sitter Carnell Parker III of Clarksville, TN in the Parker Racing Mastersbilt coming off the fourth turn. Fields got by Parker on lap two to take the second spot, and Smith moved up to battle Parker for third on lap three.

Parker and Smith raced side-by-side for four laps before Smith took over third on lap seven. The first of only two caution flags that slowed the field was waved on lap nine when Roger Rollison of Meridian, MS spun the Best Western of Meridian GRT in turn two.

Boland led Fields, Smith, Parker, Gentry, Keeton, Terry Mosley of Gilbertown, AL in the Insane Racing Rocket, Tice, Michael Keener of Douglasville, GA in the Peach State Insurance Rocket, and Turner down for the restart. Gentry, who started fourth, began his march to the front of the pack on the restart by getting around Parker for the fourth spot.

Keeton moved by Parker on lap 11 to take over the fifth position. Gentry chased down Smith, and moved up to the third spot on lap 14, and then began looking under Fields for second. Gentry pulled along side Fields on lap 14, and then made an inside move coming off the fourth turn to move into the second spot.

While Gentry reeled in Boland in lapped traffic, Keeton passed Smith for the fourth spot on lap 17. Gentry was able to catch Boland in lapped traffic on lap 22, and began looking for racing room at the bottom of the track. After racing Boland wheel-to-wheel for a couple of laps, Gentry found what he needed coming off the bottom of the fourth turn to take the lead.

Boland was able to stay with Gentry in lapped traffic, and even got inside of Gentry on a couple of occasions, but the lapped cars forced him to stay behind the leader. The lapped traffic went away when the caution flag came out on lap 45 when Richard Guidry of Port Allen, LA stalled his Tony’s Custom Carburetors Barry Wright on the front straightaway.

Gentry led Boland, Fields, Keeton, Smith, Tice, Henry, Goldman, Buckingham, and Turner down for the restart.

With Gentry covering the bottom groove of the race track, Boland stepped to the outside, and had enough momentum to pull along side Gentry coming off the second turn on lap 50. Boland couldn’t get the same bite off turn four, as he did off turn two, and Gentry began to pull away. Keeton had moved up to the third spot on lap 47, and was reeling in Boland.

Once he saw Gentry pull away, Boland got back down on the bottom groove to keep Keeton behind him. Gentry was able to pull away in lapped traffic in the last five laps of the race to take his sixth win on the last eight StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series events. Gentry now leads Buckingham by 54 points in the StormPay.com DLMS point standings.

In preliminary action on Saturday night, Larry Boutwell of Baker, FL won the first 15-lap B-Main in the McLeod Construction TNT, and Keith Talley of Biloxi, MS won the second 15-lap B-Main in the Fayards BP Mastersbilt.

On Friday night, Gentry, Parker, Boland, and Fields won their respective 12-lap heat races, and Parker won the StormPay.com Lightning Quick 6 Dash to earn the pole position. Gentry was the fastest qualifier among the 41 entrants with a lap around the ¼-mile clay oval in 13.920 seconds.

Gentry, Mosley, and track owner Rodney Wing teamed up to give some fans “The American Cancer Society Ride For Life” in a special two-seat dirt late model. Fans bid $5,100 on the series web site during the week, and at the track on Saturday night to take the rides. The proceeds from the auctions went to the American Cancer Society.

The next event for the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series National Tour will be at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL on Saturday night, September 23. It will be the third visit of the season for the series at TST, and Gentry has won the last two series events there.
