MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (Sept. 23-24) – Richie Gustin and Darin Duffy won JR Motorsports Haw¬keye Dirt Tour features, while Mark Elliott wrapped up the IMCA Modified series title at Mar¬shalltown Speedway’s Havoc On The High Banks special.
Eighth and sixth-place showings over the weekend netted Elliott the crown along with bonus points to be applied to IMCA national and regional standings. Each feature paid $1,000 and was a Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot qualifying event for 2012.
Gustin took the lead early in Friday’s 30-lapper and opened up a comfortable advantage as Jon Snyder, Jeff Waterman, Luke Wanninger and Todd Hansen fought over second.
Snyder got the best of that battle and he closed in on Gustin. After a couple yellow flags around lap 10, Gustin and Snyder pulled away from the pack.
A new tussle for third developed featuring Wanninger, Vern Jackson and Ronn Lauritzen. Engine problems knocked out the second-running Snyder and caused the caution on lap 27 that set a three-lap dash for the Havoc win.
Gustin, Jackson and Lauritzen came off turn two three-wide after the restart and that trio stayed close to the checkers, as Gustin used the highside momentum off turn four to secure the win.
Lauritzen finished second despite a plug wire getting knocked off at about midway. Duffy, who had been flirting with the top five during the final 10 circuits, used the late restart to his ad¬vantage and finished fourth.
Jacob Murray rounded out the top five.
Elliott led early in the Saturday show, pursued by Gustin while Snyder, Murray, Waterman and eventually Duffy contested for third.
After a lap 13 yellow, Gustin worked underneath to try and steal the lead while trying to keep Adam Larson and Todd Shute in check. Snyder and Duffy were the drivers at the front of a cluster of cars wrangling for fifth.
Larson took the lead following a lap 17 restart with Duffy and Gustin right behind. Duffy fi¬nally found the opportunity he sought to take the lead on lap 20 and he ran in front the rest of the way.
Snyder worked his way back toward the front to finish second, followed by Shute, Larson and Gustin.
Brian Irvine swept the Havoc On the High Banks IMCA Sunoco Stock Car features while Cayden Carter did the same in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods. Those races each paid $500 to win. Devin Smith and Scott Pippert were $300 IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stock winners and Merv Chandler earned $100 for his Mach-1 Sport Compact win on Saturday.
