OKTAHA, Okla. (June 11) – On short notice, the USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series rolled into the Outlaw Motor Speedway Friday night for the second round of action in the 4th Annual USMTS Southern Speedweek.

Early Thursday afternoon, officials at the Boothill Speedway in Greenwood, La., were forced to cancel Friday night’s USMTS Southern Speedweek event due to heavy rain and flooding in the area, but officials at the Outlaw Motor Speedway picked up the date and took on the risk with just a one-day notice.

Their efforts paid off as fans rewarded them with a packed house for the second visit of the season by the USMTS road warriors while Ryan Gustin served notice that he is a legitimate threat to win at any time in any time at any racetrack in America.

Defending USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series champion and current points leader Jason Hughes drew the pole position for the second straight night and had hopes of notching his second straight win.

His reign at the front of the field was short-lived, however, as sixth-starting Gustin motored by Hughes for the lead just five laps into the 30-lap main event, then went on to dominate the remaining 25 circuits around the high-banked 3/8-mile dirt oval.

The win was Gustin’s 11th under the USMTS banner, but the first USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series triumph for the 19-year-old phenom from Marshalltown, Iowa.

Gustin’s 11 career wins have come at 11 different venues in 7 different states.

Hughes had to settle for the runner-up paycheck while John O Whittington finished third ahead of Randy Timms and Kelly Shryock.

Jeremy Ross came from the 16th starting spot to finish sixth, Trevor Egbert was seventh, Shane Hebert started 20th and finished eighth, Jason Teague nabbed ninth and Johnny Scott rounded out the top-10 finishers.

Hughes continues to lead the USMTS Castle Rock Recruiting Southern Series points by a stout 168 markers (1070 to 902) over Shryock, who captured the 2007 title in the debut season for the series. Timms climbed to third in the rankings with 826 points, followed by Moran Bagley (814), Rodney Sanders (809), Bumper Jones (780), Steve Holzkamper (727), Gustin (711), Whittington (644) and Hebert (635).
