MAYETTA, Kan. (Jan. 9) – A fifth IMCA division will be featured this season at Thunder Hill Speedway, as Mach-1 Sport Compacts join Saturday shows at Mayetta.
Affordability and a proven set of rules were two reasons behind the decision to add the 4-cylinder class, explained promoter Mike Conkwright.
“We have been looking for an entry level class that Is affordable for younger drivers,” he said. “There are seven or eight guys who have already told me they were interested in running them.”
“Some of our Modified drivers have kids who want to race and this is the class that they’re starting in,” Conkwright continued. “We like being able to add a class that comes with a set of rules and allows drivers to race at other tracks without having to change their cars to be legal.”
Thunder Hill’s 2012 schedule has yet to be finalized but Sport Compacts may join IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars, IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods on the opening night program April 7.
The Don Garst Memorial special is set for May 26 and the Oren Covert Memorial is July 21. Local track points will be awarded through Sept. 23. The final event of the season is the Thunder On The Hill special on dates to be announced in October.
Sanctioned Modifieds, Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks and Northern SportMods will also run Fridays at Salina Speedway, two hours south and west of Mayetta.
Salina and Thunder Hill will offer bonuses to drivers in those divisions who can win features at both tracks in the same weekend, as well as those who can win track championships at both speedplants this season. Fans at each facility will be eligible for tickets to attend races at the other venue throughout the year.
“We’re pretty excited about teaming up with Salina,” Conkwright said. “I think this will be good for the drivers and for the fans.”
Both Thunder Hill and Salina are part of the ButlerBuilt Central Region for Modifieds and Probe industries Northern Regions for Stock Cars and for Hobby Stocks. Points earned in all sanctioned divisions at the two tracks apply toward IMCA Speedway Motors Weekly Racing national titles.
