52 Race Teams On Hand For Open Practice
Buckingham ‘Wins’ Practice
Rural Retreat, VA (Aug-29) On a beautiful night in the pristine Southwest Virginia Mountains, 52 race teams converged on Wythe Raceway to take advantage of the Open Practice held this evening in advance of the 5th Annual Pro Late Model Nationals which get into full swing Saturday. With the level of competition the FASTRAK Modern Chevrolet Southeastern Touring Series has seen this year with 13 different winners in the last 14 events, surpassing last years total of 32 cars on practice night is not surprising.
Understandably, all 52 race teams were working feverishly to get their cars dialed in for tomorrow nights Qualifying and Heat Races. There were some teams that turned as many as 60 laps of practice. It was obvious many drivers were trying different chassis set ups as well as different racing lines around the high banked 1/2 mile Wythe Raceway.
Shannon Buckingham of Morristown, TN was the “unofficial winner” of practice turning in the night’s best lap of 18.36 seconds. William Thomas clocked in with the nights second best lap, 18.53 seconds, tied with Ty Dillon who also turned in an identical 18.53 seconds. To the delight of the fans in attendance, Rural Retreat native Brandon Umberger was next at 18.570 seconds, followed by Chris Cantrell of Chester SC clocking in at 18.63 seconds.
On tap for tomorrow: Qualifying and Heat Races which will set the field for Sunday’s $10,000 To Win Pro Late Model Nationals. Ordinarily, the drivers who don’t make the show, so to speak, load up and head home, BUT a race has been added to the schedule of events on Sunday, just for them. The race will start as many as 32 cars as well.
Earlier this week, FASTRAK Series founder and CEO Stan Lester announced from Rural Retreat’s Wythe Raceway, the addition of another event to the schedule on Sunday, thus, allowing those who do not make the 32 car, 75 lap Pro Late Model Nationals to compete in a ‘paid’ race of their own.
But before all of the racing action begins, many of the FASTRAK Late Model Series drivers will be on hand at 11:00 Saturday morning at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Wytheville, VA (located at I-81’s Exit 70) to benefit Children’s Miracle Network. An autograph session is being held in front of the store from 11 – 1. All proceeds will go to Children’s Miracle Network. FASTRAK Late Model Series race cars will be on display offering race fans the opportunity to talk to drivers and see the cars up close.
