LOCUST GROVE AR. Jack Sullivan dominated the 3rd Annual Dirt Works World Modified Championship Saturday, at the Batesville Speedway. Sullivan started on the pole for the event lead all 70 laps, and was never challenged for the lead. Six cautions slowed the event, but Sullivan was able to pull away each time. Sullivan picked up $9,000 for the win, and secured a spot in next years Alltel 100.

Brandon Smith was entered in the event as the Batesville Speedway provisonal starter, being the season's top finisher in points, not qualified for the race.

Sullivan, Richie Tosh, and Jon Debenedetti were aligned in three wide configuration to start the 70 Lap Feature. Sullivan moved to the lead with Tosh and Jimmy Owens falling in behind. Owens drove under Tosh to the second spot on the opening lap. Scott Drake moved to third on lap two, then Jason Hughes got around Tosh for the fourth spot on lap three.

Sullivan lead Owens by five carlenghs by lap five. Drake and Hughes were side by side on lap six. Hughes moved by Drake for third on the backstretch on lap seven. Sullivan had expanded his lead to fifteen carlengths by lap 10.

The yellow flag waved on lap 13 for debris on the track after Kevin Salter broke. Salter was the first car out of the race.

Jason Hughes shot into the second spot on the double-file restart. Gary Clark worked to third ahead of Owens and Drake as the field sorted itself back out following the re-start.

It didn't take Sullivan long to move back out to a ten carlength advantage. Wayne Brooks made an appearance in the top five, getting by Drake on lap 20. Out front, Sullivan had a half straightaway margin by that point in the race.

Brooks and Owens were side by side for fourth on lap 28. Sullivan was a full straightaway ahead of the field by lap 30, and was looking at traffic by lap 32.

The yellow flag waved on lap 33, as Ronnie Jeffrey had slowed dramatically on the backstretch. The caution allowed Jeffrey to get his car pitside, also done for the night.

Sullivan re-opened a ten carlength advantage as the field re-started. Clark and Ownes dueled side by side for third. Mark Noble moved to fifth on the restart, then drove by Brooks for fourth on lap 37. Greg Waugh improved past Brooks for fifth on lap 40, then drove by Noble for the fourth spot on the next circuit.

Once again, Sullivan was pacing the field by a half straightaway by lap 43. The caution re-appeared on lap 49 as Freddy Hogrefe got his car upside down in turn four. Hogrefe had tangled with Jason Wilkey and ended up on his roof in the mele. Hogrefe wasn't injured, but was through for the night.

Gary Clark and Jason Hughes were side by side on the restart, and Clark moved to the second spot on lap 50. Sullivan was dominating the action again, with a 15 carlength margin by lap 54. The caution flag came right back out on lap 57, as Micah Gavin was in the backstretch wall.

The restart was kind to Jason Hughes, as he re-took second over Clark. Clark got back even with Hughes however, and had taken the second spot back over on lap 59. The yellow flag waved on lap 64 for Jon Debenedetti, who was stopped in turn two.

Greg Waugh shot into third on the restart ahead of Owens and Hughes, but progress was slowed again on lap 67, this time for Al Hejna, who was in the outside retaining wall in turn three.

Owens and Waugh were side by side on the restart. Something broke on Waugh's car as the field took the white flag and he slowed, falling outside the top ten.

Jack Sullivan came home with the win, with Gary Clark, Jason Hughes, Jimmy Owens, and Jeff Taylor making up the top five. Scott Drake, John Whittington, Kelly Shryock, Micah Gavin, and Johnny Bone Jr. rounded out the top ten.
